At this time he said no more. But about twenty days later, he sent for the most prominent of the Persians that were about him, and thus addressed them: “Persians, I have to make known to you something which I kept most strictly concealed. ,When I was in Egypt I had a dream, which I wish I had not had; it seemed to me that a messenger came from home to tell me that Smerdis sitting on the royal throne touched heaven with his head. ,Then I feared that my brother would take away my sovereignty from me, and I acted with more haste than wisdom; for it is not in the power of human nature to run away from what is to be; but I, blind as I was, sent Prexaspes to Susa to kill Smerdis. When that great wrong was done I lived without fear, for I never thought that when Smerdis was removed another man might rise against me. ,But I mistook altogether what was to be; I have killed my brother when there was no need, and I have lost my kingdom none the less; for it was the Magus Smerdis that the divinity forewarned in the dream would revolt. ,Now he has been done for by me, and I would have you believe that Smerdis Cyrus' son no longer lives; the Magi rule the kingdom, the one that I left caretaker of my house, and his brother Smerdis. So then, the man is dead of an unholy destiny at the hands of his relations who ought to have been my avenger for the disgrace I have suffered from the Magi; ,and as he is no longer alive, necessity constrains me to charge you, men of Persia , in his place, with the last desire of my life. In the name of the gods of my royal house I charge all of you, but chiefly those Achaemenids that are here, not to let the sovereignty fall again into Median hands; if they have it after getting it by trickery, take it back through trickery of your own; if they have got it away by force, then by force all the stronger get it back. ,And if you do this, may your land bring forth fruit, and your women and your flocks and herds be blessed with offspring, remaining free for all time; but if you do not get the kingdom back or attempt to get it back, then I pray things turn out the opposite for you, and on top of this, that every Persian meet an end such as mine.” With that Cambyses wept bitterly for all that had happened to him. |

I was born from Bilhah, and because Rachel dealt craftily, and gave Bilhah in place of herself to Jacob, and she conceived and bare me upon Rachel's knees, therefore she called my name Naphtali. 1.7. For Rachel loved me very much because I was born upon her lap; and when I was still young she was wont to kiss me, and say: May I have a brother of thine from mine own womb, like unto thee. 1.8. Whence also Joseph was like unto me in all things, according to the prayers of Rachel. 1.9. Now my mother was Bilhah, daughter of Rotheus the brother of Deborah, Rebecca's nurse, who was born on one and the self-same day with Rachel. 2.6. As a man's strength, so also is his work; and as his mind, so also is his skill; and as his purpose, so also is his achievement; and as his heart, so also is his mouth; as his eye, so also is his sleep; as his soul, so also is his word, either in the law of the Lord or in the works of Beliar. 3.2. Sun and moon and stars change not their order; so do ye also change not the law of God in the disorderliness of your doings. 5.3. And we all of us ran together, and Levi laid hold of the sun, and Judah outstripped the others and seized the moon, and they were both of them lifted up with them. 5.6. And, a bull upon the earth, with two great horns, and an eagle's wings upon its back; and we wished to seize him; but could not. 5.8. And Joseph fled away upon a little boat, and we were all divided upon nine planks, and Levi and Judah were together. 7.1. These two dreams I told to my father; and he said to me: These things must be fulfilled in their season, after that Israel hath endured many things. 7.2. Then my father saith unto me: I believe God that Joseph liveth, for I see always that the Lord numbereth him with you, 7.3. And he said, weeping: Ah me, my son Joseph, thou livest, though I behold thee not, and thou seest not Jacob that begat thee. 7.4. And when I was feeding the flocks in Abel-Maul, the spirit of understanding of the Lord came upon me, and I saw all men corrupting their way, and that unrighteousness had built for itself walls, and lawlessness sat upon towers. 2.5. Then there fell upon me a sleep, and I beheld a high mountain, and I was upon it. 6.1. And when I was going to my father, I found a brazen shield; wherefore also the name of the mountain is Aspis, which is near Gebal, to the south of Abila 8.2. And I saw seven men in white raiment saying unto me: Arise, put on the robe of the priesthood, and the crown of righteousness, and the breastplate of understanding, and the garment of truth, and the plate of faith, and the turban of the head, and the ephod of prophecy. 8.3. And they severally carried (these things) and put (them,) on me, and said unto me: From henceforth become a priest of the Lord, thou and thy seed for ever. 8.4. And the first anointed me with holy oil, and gave to me the staff of judgment. 8.5. The second washed me with pure water, and fed me with bread and wine (even) the most holy things, and clad me with a holy and glorious robe. 8.6. The third clothed me with a linen vestment like an ephod. 8.7. The, fourth put round me a girdle like unto purple. 8.8. The fifth gave me a branch of rich olive. 8.9. The sixth placed a crown on my head. 9.3. And when we came to Bethel, my father saw a vision concerning me, that I should be their priest unto God. 9.4. In my hundred and eighteenth year Joseph died. 13.1. And now, my children, I command you: Fear the Lord your God with your whole heart, And walk in simplicity according to all His law. 14.1. Therefore, my children, I have learnt that at the end of the ages ye will transgress against the Lord, stretching out hands to wickedness [against Him]; and to all the Gentiles shall ye become a scorn. 15.1. Therefore the temple, which the Lord shall choose, shall be laid waste through your uncleanness, and ye shall be captives throughout all nations. 15.4. And if you were not to receive mercy through Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, our fathers, not one of our seed should be left upon the earth. 16.1. And now I have learnt that for seventy weeks ye shall go astray, and profane the priesthood, and pollute the sacrifices. 17.1. And whereas ye have heard concerning the seventy weeks, hear also concerning the priesthood. For in each jubilee there shall be a priesthood. 17.2. And in the first jubilee, the first who is anointed to the priesthood shall be great, and shall speak to God as to a father. And his priesthood shall be perfect with the Lord, [and in the day of his gladness shall he arise for the salvation of the world]. 17.3. In the second jubilee, he that is anointed shall be conceived in the sorrow of beloved ones; and his priesthood shall be honoured and shall be glorified by all. 17.4. And the third priest shall be taken hold of by sorrow. 17.5. And the fourth shall be in pain, because unrighteousness shall gather itself against him exceedingly, and all Israel shall hate each one his neighbour. 17.6. The fifth shall be taken hold of by darkne 17.7. Likewise also the sixth and the seventh. 17.8. And in the seventh shall be such pollution as I cannot express before men, for they shall know it who do these things. 17.9. Therefore shall they be taken captive and become a prey, and their land and their substance shall be destroyed. 18.1. And after their punishment shall have come from the Lord, the priesthood shall fail. 19.1. And now, my children, ye have heard all; choose, therefore, for yourselves either the light or the darkness, either the law of the Lord or the works of Beliar. |

The children of Ham possessed the land from Syria and Amanus, and the mountains of Libanus; seizing upon all that was on its sea-coasts, and as far as the ocean, and keeping it as their own. Some indeed of its names are utterly vanished away; others of them being changed, and another sound given them, are hardly to be discovered; yet a few there are which have kept their denominations entire. |

One b who lets blood and does not wash his hands will be afraid for seven days. /b One b who cuts his hair and does not wash his hands will be afraid for three days. /b One b who cuts his nails and does not wash his hands will be afraid for one day, and he will not know what is frightening /b him. Placing one’s b hand on /b his b nostrils /b is b a way to /b become b afraid. /b Placing one’s b hand on his forehead is a way /b to fall b asleep. /b ,A Sage b taught: /b If b food and drink /b are b under /b one’s b bed, even if they are covered with iron vessels, an evil spirit rests upon them. The Sages taught: A person /b should b not drink water on Tuesday nights or on Shabbat nights, /b i.e., Friday nights. b And if he drinks /b water, b his blood is upon his /b own b head, due to /b the b danger. /b The Gemara asks: b What is /b this b danger? /b The Gemara answers: The danger of the b evil spirit /b that rules on these days.,The Gemara asks: b And if he is thirsty, what is his remedy? /b What should he drink? The Gemara answers: b He /b should b say /b the b seven voices that David said over the water, and afterward he /b may b drink. As it is stated: “The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; God of glory thunders, even the Lord upon many waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. /b He makes them also skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young wild ox. b The voice of the Lord hews out flames of fire. The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord makes the hinds to calve, and strips the forests bare; and in His temple all say: Glory” /b (Psalms 29:3–9)., b And if /b he does b not /b remember that verse, b he /b should b say as follows: Lul, Shafan, Anigron, Anirdafin, /b which are names of demons, b I sit between the stars, I walk between thin /b and b fat /b people, take any of them if you wish but leave me alone. b And if /b he does b not /b recall this incantation, b if there is /b another b person with him, he /b should b wake him and say to him: So-and-so, son of so-and-so, I thirst for water; and then /b he may b drink. And if /b there is b no /b other person with him, he should b knock the cover on the cup and then drink. And if /b he is b not /b able to do this, b he /b should b throw some /b object b in it and then drink. /b , b The Sages taught: A person /b should b not drink water from rivers or from ponds at night. And if he drank, his blood is upon his /b own b head due to the danger. /b The Gemara explains: b What is /b this b danger? The danger of blindness. /b The Gemara asks: b And if he is thirsty, what is his remedy? If there is /b another b person with him, he /b should b say to him: So-and-so, son of so-and-so, I thirst for water. And if /b there is b no /b one else with him, b he /b should b say to himself: So-and-so, my mother said to me /b to b beware of i shavrirei /i , /b the demon of blindness. He should continue to say the following incantation, in the first part of which the demon’s name gradually disappears: b i Shavrirei berirei rirei yiri ri /i ; I thirst for water in white /b earthenware b cups. /b This is an incantation against those demons.,The Gemara returns to the statement of the mishna that on Passover one must drink no less than four cups of wine: b And /b this i halakha /i applies b even /b if the poor person accepts funds b from the charity plate. /b The Gemara asks: It is b obvious /b that this is the case. If there is a mitzva to drink these four cups, they must be provided for him.,The Gemara answers: The mishna b is necessary only /b to teach that this i halakha /i applies b even according to /b the opinion of b Rabbi Akiva, who said: Make your Shabbat /b like an ordinary b weekday and do not be beholden to /b other b beings. /b If one is unable to honor Shabbat without ficial help from others, it is better for him to save money and eat his Shabbat meals as he would on a weekday rather than rely on other people. b Here, /b in the case of the four cups, Rabbi Akiva b concedes /b that it is appropriate for a poor person to request assistance from the community, b due to /b the obligation b to publicize the miracle. /b ,With regard to this issue, b the school of Eliyahu taught /b that b although Rabbi Akiva said: Make your Shabbat /b like b a weekday and do not be beholden to /b other b beings; however, one /b should nevertheless b perform some small /b alteration b in his house /b to distinguish Shabbat from a weekday. The Gemara asks: b What /b is b this /b alteration? b Rav Pappa said: /b For example, one should serve b small, fried fish. As we learned /b in a mishna: b Rabbi Yehuda ben Teima says: Be bold like a leopard, light like an eagle, run like a deer, and /b be b strong like a lion to perform the will of your Father in Heaven. /b This statement teaches that one should exert every effort to perform a mitzva.,The Gemara cites the full source of Rabbi’s Akiva statement with regard to Shabbat preparations. b The Sages taught: Rabbi Akiva commanded Rabbi Yehoshua, his son, /b about b seven matters: My son, do not sit at the high point of a city, /b where many people pass, b and study /b there, as the passersby will interrupt you. b And do not live in a city whose leaders are Torah scholars, /b as they are too busy studying to govern properly.,Rabbi Akiva continued: b And do not enter your house suddenly, /b without knocking first; b all the more so /b do not enter b the house of another, /b as he might not be ready to receive you. b And do not withhold shoes from your feet, /b as it is disgraceful to go barefoot. b Wake up and eat, in the summer due to the heat, /b as it is best to eat before it grows hot, b and in the winter due to /b the strength you will need to tolerate b the cold. And make your Shabbat /b like b a weekday and do not be beholden to /b other b beings. And exert yourself /b to join together b with a person upon whom the hour smiles, /b i.e., a successful person., b Rav Pappa said /b in explanation of this last statement: b Do not buy from him and do not sell to him. /b If he is the beneficiary of good fortune, he will profit from any business transaction and you will suffer from it. b Rather, form a partnership with him. And now /b we have heard b that Rav Shmuel bar Yitzḥak said: What /b is the meaning of that b which is written: “You have blessed the work of his hands” /b (Job 1:10)? This means that b anyone who took a i peruta /i from Job would be blessed, /b even if he received it via a business transaction. This shows that one should engage in business with a person who is blessed, for b even if /b he wishes b to buy from him or to sell to him it is well, /b i.e., he will share in the good fortune of the other.,The Gemara continues to cite similar advice dispensed by Rabbi Akiva. b Rabbi Akiva commanded Rabbi Shimon ben Yoḥai /b to do b five matters when /b Rabbi Akiva b was imprisoned. /b Beforehand, Rabbi Shimon b said to him: Rabbi, teach me Torah. /b Rabbi Akiva b said /b to him: b I will not teach you, /b as it is dangerous to do so at the present time. Rabbi Shimon b said to him /b in jest: b If you will not teach me, I will tell Yoḥai /b my b father, and he will turn you over to the government. /b In other words, I have no means of persuading you; you are already in prison. Rabbi Akiva b said: My son, /b know that b more than the calf wishes to suck, the cow wants to suckle, /b but I am afraid of the danger. Rabbi Shimon b said to him: And who is in danger? Isn’t the calf in danger, /b as you are in jail and I am the one at risk?,Rabbi Akiva b said to him: /b If so, I will tell you a few matters. First of all, b if you wish to strangle yourself, hang yourself on a tall tree. /b This proverb means that if one wants others to accept what he has to say, he should attribute his statement to a great man. b And when you teach your son, teach him from a corrected text. /b The Gemara asks: b What is /b the meaning of b that /b statement? b Rava said, and some say Rav Mesharshiya /b said: Rabbi Akiva was referring b to /b learning b a new /b topic, for b once a mistake enters /b one’s mind, it has b entered /b there and is difficult to put right.,Rabbi Akiva further told Rabbi Shimon ben Yoḥai: b Do not cook in a pot in which your colleague cooked /b his food. The Gemara asks: b What is /b the meaning of b this /b statement? The Gemara explains: Rabbi Akiva is referring to marrying b a divorced woman in the lifetime of her /b former b husband. As the Master said: /b If b a divorced man marries a divorced woman, there are four minds in the bed /b during intimacy. Each person thinks about his current and former spouse, which verges on illegitimacy. b And if you wish, say /b instead that this advice holds true b even with regard to /b marrying b a widow, as /b |
