24.5. ᾕρει πανδαμάτωρ, ἀλλʼ ἐστρέφετʼ ἔνθα καὶ ἔνθα 24.5. Then was the gathering broken up, and the folk scattered, each man to go to his own ship. The rest bethought them of supper and of sweet sleep, to take their fill thereof; but Achilles wept, ever remembering his dear comrade, neither might sleep 24.5. that mastereth all, lay hold of him, but he turned him ever to this side or to that, yearning for the man-hood and valorous might of Patroclus, thinking on all he had wrought with him and all the woes he had borne, passing though wars of men and the grievous waves. Thinking thereon he would shed big tears

4. Euripides, Helen, 1643-1687, 1642 (5th cent. BCE - 5th cent. BCE)

1642. ἐπίσχες ὀργὰς αἷσιν οὐκ ὀρθῶς φέρῃ 1642. DIOSCURI: Restrain those bursts of rage that hurry thee to undue lengths, Theoclymenus, king of this country. We are the twin sons of Zeus that call to thee by name, whom Leda bore one day, with Helen too who hath fled from thy palace. For thou art wroth for a marriage never destined for thee; nor is thy sister Theonoe, daughter of a Nereid goddess, wronging thee because she honours the word of God and her father's just behests. For it was ordained that Helen should abide within thy halls up till the present time, but since Troy is razed to the ground and she hath lent her name to the goddesses, no longer need she stay, now must she be united in the self-same wedlock as before, and reach her home and share it with her husband. Withhold then thy maligt blade from thy sister, and believe that she herein is acting with discretion. Long, long ago had we our sister saved, seeing that Zeus has made us gods, but we were too weak for destiny as well as the deities, who willed these things to be. This is my bidding to thee; while to my sister I say, "Sail on with thy husband; and ye shall have a prosperous breeze; for we, thy brethren twain, will course along the deep and bring you safely to your fatherland. And when at last thy goal is reached and thy life ended, thou shalt be famous as a goddess, and with thy twin brethren share the drink-offering, and like us receive gifts from men, for such is the will of Zeus.
5. Euripides, Hippolytus, 84-86, 1391 (5th cent. BCE - 5th cent. BCE)

1391. ἔα: 1391. Ah! the fragrance from my goddess wafted! Even in my agony I feel thee near and find relief; she is here in this very place, my goddess Artemis. Artemi
6. Sophocles, Ajax, 91-93, 14 (5th cent. BCE - 5th cent. BCE)

14. Voice of Athena, dearest to me of the gods
7. Sophocles, Antigone, 606-608, 605 (5th cent. BCE - 5th cent. BCE)

605. Your power, great Zeus—what human overstepping can check it? Yours is power that neither Sleep, the all-ensnaring, nor the untiring months of the gods can defeat. Unaged through time
8. Sophocles, Philoctetes, 1016-1037, 1049, 1054-1062, 108, 1116-1117, 1140-1145, 1155-1157, 1165-1167, 1181-1182, 120, 1222-1408, 1410-1451, 1455, 1464-1468, 257, 343-347, 356-358, 381, 779-781, 85-89, 896-899, 90, 900-909, 91, 910-919, 92, 920-926, 93, 930-932, 94, 942, 946-947, 95, 952-958, 100 (5th cent. BCE - 5th cent. BCE)

100. ODYSSEUS: I'm ordering you to use deceitful means to seize Philoctetes. NEOPTOLEMUS: But why deceit? Why not persuade him? ODYSSEUS: The man won't listen. And he's not someone you can take by force. NEOPTOLEMUS: Is he that confident, that powerful? ODYSSEUS: Indeed, he is. His arrows never miss. Every shot brings death. NEOPTOLEMUS: I have no chance at all if I move out to challenge him? ODYSSEUS: None whatsoever, unless, as I've said, you use some trick to grab him. NEOPTOLEMUS: So you don't think there's any shame in saying something false? ODYSSEUS: No, I don't — not if the lies will save us. NEOPTOLEMUS: But how can anyone control his face when he dares speak such lies? ODYSSEUS: When what you do brings benefits, you should not hesitate. NEOPTOLEMUS: If that man comes to Troy, how do I benefit? ODYSSEUS: The only way the city can be captured is with his bow and arrows. NEOPTOLEMUS: So I am not the one who'll take that city, as you told me? 140 ODYSSEUS: Yes, but you need them, and they need you. NEOPTOLEMUS: If that's true, we must track them down, it seems. ODYSSEUS: By doing this work, you'll garner two rewards. NEOPTOLEMUS: How? If I knew that, I'd not refuse it. ODYSSEUS: In this one act, you'll get yourself a name for shrewdness and nobility. NEOPTOLEMUS: All right 100. What, then, are your orders—apart from my lying? Odysseu
