6.1. And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them," 6.2. that the sons of nobles saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives, whomsoever they chose." 6.3. And the LORD said: ‘My spirit shall not abide in man for ever, for that he also is flesh; therefore shall his days be a hundred and twenty years.’" 6.4. The Nephilim were in the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of nobles came in unto the daughters of men, and they bore children to them; the same were the mighty men that were of old, the men of renown."

433b. is a saying that we have heard from many and have often repeated ourselves. We have. This, then, I said, my friend, if taken in a certain sense appears to be justice, this principle of doing one’s own business. Do you know whence I infer this? No, but tell me, he said. I think that this is the remaining virtue in the state after our consideration of soberness, courage, and intelligence, a quality which made it possible for them all to grow up in the body politic and which when they have sprung up preserves them as long as it is present. And I hardly need to remind you that
7. Septuagint, Tobit, 11 (4th cent. BCE - 2nd cent. BCE)

8. Septuagint, Wisdom of Solomon, 2.12, 6.10, 7.1-7.7, 7.10-7.12, 7.14-7.19, 7.21-7.27, 8.7, 8.17-8.18, 13.1-13.9, 14.15 (2nd cent. BCE - 1st cent. BCE)

2.12. Let us lie in wait for the righteous man, because he is inconvenient to us and opposes our actions;he reproaches us for sins against the law,and accuses us of sins against our training. 6.10. For they will be made holy who observe holy things in holiness, and those who have been taught them will find a defense. 7.1. I also am mortal, like all men,a descendant of the first-formed child of earth;and in the womb of a mother I was molded into flesh 7.2. within the period of ten months, compacted with blood, from the seed of a man and the pleasure of marriage. 7.3. And when I was born, I began to breathe the common air,and fell upon the kindred earth, and my first sound was a cry, like that of all. 7.4. I was nursed with care in swaddling cloths. 7.5. For no king has had a different beginning of existence; 7.6. there is for all mankind one entrance into life, and a common departure. 7.7. Therefore I prayed, and understanding was given me;I called upon God, and the spirit of wisdom came to me. 7.10. I loved her more than health and beauty, and I chose to have her rather than light, because her radiance never ceases. 7.11. All good things came to me along with her,and in her hands uncounted wealth. 7.12. I rejoiced in them all, because wisdom leads them;but I did not know that she was their mother. 7.14. for it is an unfailing treasure for men;those who get it obtain friendship with God,commended for the gifts that come from instruction. 7.15. May God grant that I speak with judgment and have thought worthy of what I have received, for he is the guide even of wisdom and the corrector of the wise. 7.16. For both we and our words are in his hand,as are all understanding and skill in crafts. 7.17. For it is he who gave me unerring knowledge of what exists,to know the structure of the world and the activity of the elements; 7.18. the beginning and end and middle of times, the alternations of the solstices and the changes of the seasons 7.19. the cycles of the year and the constellations of the stars 7.21. I learned both what is secret and what is manifest 7.22. for wisdom, the fashioner of all things, taught me. For in her there is a spirit that is intelligent, holy, unique, manifold, subtle, mobile, clear, unpolluted, distinct, invulnerable, loving the good, keen, irresistible 7.23. beneficent, humane, steadfast, sure, free from anxiety,all-powerful, overseeing all,and penetrating through all spirits that are intelligent and pure and most subtle. 7.24. For wisdom is more mobile than any motion;because of her pureness she pervades and penetrates all things. 7.25. For she is a breath of the power of God,and a pure emanation of the glory of the Almighty;therefore nothing defiled gains entrance into her. 7.26. For she is a reflection of eternal light,a spotless mirror of the working of God,and an image of his goodness. 7.27. Though she is but one, she can do all things, and while remaining in herself, she renews all things;in every generation she passes into holy souls and makes them friends of God, and prophets; 8.7. And if any one loves righteousness, her labors are virtues;for she teaches self-control and prudence, justice and courage;nothing in life is more profitable for men than these. 8.17. When I considered these things inwardly, and thought upon them in my mind, that in kinship with wisdom there is immortality 8.18. and in friendship with her, pure delight, and in the labors of her hands, unfailing wealth, and in the experience of her company, understanding, and renown in sharing her words,I went about seeking how to get her for myself. 13.1. For all men who were ignorant of God were foolish by nature;and they were unable from the good things that are seen to know him who exists, nor did they recognize the craftsman while paying heed to his works; 13.2. but they supposed that either fire or wind or swift air,or the circle of the stars, or turbulent water,or the luminaries of heaven were the gods that rule the world. 13.3. If through delight in the beauty of these things men assumed them to be gods, let them know how much better than these is their Lord, for the author of beauty created them. 13.4. And if men were amazed at their power and working, let them perceive from them how much more powerful is he who formed them. 13.5. For from the greatness and beauty of created things comes a corresponding perception of their Creator. 13.6. Yet these men are little to be blamed, for perhaps they go astray while seeking God and desiring to find him. 13.7. For as they live among his works they keep searching, and they trust in what they see, because the things that are seen are beautiful. 13.8. Yet again, not even they are to be excused; 13.9. for if they had the power to know so much that they could investigate the world, how did they fail to find sooner the Lord of these things? 14.15. For a father, consumed with grief at an untimely bereavement, made an image of his child, who had been suddenly taken from him;and he now honored as a god what was once a dead human being, and handed on to his dependents secret rites and initiations.
9. Josephus Flavius, Jewish Antiquities, 8.42-8.46 (1st cent. CE - 1st cent. CE)

8.42. 5. Now the sagacity and wisdom which God had bestowed on Solomon was so great, that he exceeded the ancients; insomuch that he was no way inferior to the Egyptians, who are said to have been beyond all men in understanding; nay, indeed, it is evident that their sagacity was very much inferior to that of the king’s. 8.42. Accordingly Ahab appears to have been deceived thereby, till he disbelieved those that foretold his defeat; but, by giving credit to such as foretold what was grateful to him, was slain; and his son Ahaziah succeeded him. 8.43. He also excelled and distinguished himself in wisdom above those who were most eminent among the Hebrews at that time for shrewdness; those I mean were Ethan, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol. 8.44. He also composed books of odes and songs a thousand and five, of parables and similitudes three thousand; for he spake a parable upon every sort of tree, from the hyssop to the cedar; and in like manner also about beasts, about all sorts of living creatures, whether upon the earth, or in the seas, or in the air; for he was not unacquainted with any of their natures, nor omitted inquiries about them, but described them all like a philosopher, and demonstrated his exquisite knowledge of their several properties. 8.45. God also enabled him to learn that skill which expels demons, which is a science useful and sanative to men. He composed such incantations also by which distempers are alleviated. And he left behind him the manner of using exorcisms, by which they drive away demons, so that they never return; 8.46. and this method of cure is of great force unto this day; for I have seen a certain man of my own country, whose name was Eleazar, releasing people that were demoniacal in the presence of Vespasian, and his sons, and his captains, and the whole multitude of his soldiers. The manner of the cure was this:
10. New Testament, Luke, 4.10-4.11 (1st cent. CE - 1st cent. CE)

4.10. for it is written, 'He will give his angels charge concerning you, to guard you;' 4.11. and, 'On their hands they will bear you up, Lest perhaps you dash your foot against a stone.'
11. New Testament, Matthew, 4.6 (1st cent. CE - 1st cent. CE)

4.6. and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, 'He will give his angels charge concerning you.' and, 'On their hands they will bear you up, So that you don't dash your foot against a stone.'
12. Irenaeus, Refutation of All Heresies, 1.9.4, 2.28.1, 3.4.1 (2nd cent. CE - 3rd cent. CE)

13. Anon., 4 Ezra, 4.36-4.37

4.36. And Jeremiel the archangel answered them and said, `When the number of those like yourselves is completed; for he has weighed the age in the balance 4.37. and measured the times by measure, and numbered the times by number; and he will not move or arouse them until that measure is fulfilled.'
