nanWhen the sinner waxed proud, with a battering-ram he cast down fortified walls, And Thou didst not restrain (him).


nanFor they reasoned unsoundly, saying to themselves,"Short and sorrowful is our life,and there is no remedy when a man comes to his end,and no one has been known to return from Hades.


nanAnd the heavens were angry, And the earth abhorred them;


nanLet us oppress the righteous poor man;let us not spare the widow nor regard the gray hairs of the aged.


nanFor no man upon it had done what they did


nanBut let our might be our law of right,for what is weak proves itself to be useless.


nanAnd the earth recognized all Thy righteous judgements, O God.


nanLet us lie in wait for the righteous man,because he is inconvenient to us and opposes our actions;he reproaches us for sins against the law,and accuses us of sins against our training.


nanThey set the sons of Jerusalem to be mocked at in return for (the) harlots in her; Every wayfarer entered in in the full light of day.


nanHe professes to have knowledge of God,and calls himself a child of the Lord.


nanThey made mock with their transgressions, as they themselves were wont to do; In the full light of day they revealed their iniquities. And the daughters of Jerusalem were defiled in accordance with Thy judgement


nanHe became to us a reproof of our thoughts;


nanBecause they had defiled themselves with unnatural intercourse. I am pained in my bowels and my inward parts for these things. (And yet) I will justify Thee, O God, in uprightness of heart, For in Thy judgements is Thy righteousness (displayed), O God.


nanthe very sight of him is a burden to us,because his manner of life is unlike that of others,and his ways are strange.


nanWe are considered by him as something base,and he avoids our ways as unclean;he calls the last end of the righteous happy,and boasts that God is his father.


nanFor Thou hast rendered to the sinners according to their deeds, Yea according to their sins, which were very wicked.


nanLet us see if his words are true,and let us test what will happen at the end of his life;


nanThou hast uncovered their sins, that Thy judgement might be manifest;


nanfor if the righteous man is Gods son, he will help him,and will deliver him from the hand of his adversaries.


nanAlien nations ascended Thine altar, They trampled (it) proudly with their sandals;


nanBecause we were born by mere chance,and hereafter we shall be as though we had never been;because the breath in our nostrils is smoke,and reason is a spark kindled by the beating of our hearts.


nanBecause the sons of Jerusalem had defiled the holy things of the Lord, Had profaned with iniquities the offerings of God.


nanWhen it is extinguished, the body will turn to ashes,and the spirit will dissolve like empty air.


nanTherefore He said: Cast them far from Me;


nanOur name will be forgotten in time and no one will remember our works;our life will pass away like the traces of a cloud,and be scattered like mist that is chased by the rays of the sun and overcome by its heat.


nanIt was set at naught before God, It was utterly dishonoured;


nanFor our allotted time is the passing of a shadow,and there is no return from our death,because it is sealed up and no one turns back.


nanThe sons and the daughters were in grievous captivity, Sealed (?) (was) their neck, branded (?) (was it) among the nations.


nanCome, therefore, let us enjoy the good things that exist,and make use of the creation to the full as in youth.


nanAccording to their sins hath He done unto them, For He hath left them in the hands of them that prevailed.


nanLet us take our fill of costly wine and perfumes,and let no flower of spring pass by us.


nanHe hath turned away His face from pitying them, Young and old and their children together;


nanLet us crown ourselves with rosebuds before they wither.


nanFor they had done evil one and all, in not hearkening.


nanLet none of us fail to share in our revelry,everywhere let us leave signs of enjoyment,because this is our portion, and this our lot.

For a man made them,and one whose spirit is borrowed formed them;for no man can form a god which is like himself. 15.17. He is mortal, and what he makes with lawless hands is dead,for he is better than the objects he worships,since he has life, but they never have. 15.18. The enemies of thy people worship even the most hateful animals,which are worse than all others, when judged by their lack of intelligence; 15.19. and even as animals they are not so beautiful in appearance that one would desire them,but they have escaped both the praise of God and his blessing.
