And the man gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found a help meet for him." 3.1. Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman: ‘Yea, hath God said: Ye shall not eat of any tree of the garden?’" 3.17. And unto Adam He said: ‘Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying: Thou shalt not eat of it; cursed is the ground for thy sake; in toil shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life." 3.19. In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken; for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.’" 6.13. And God said unto Noah: ‘The end of all flesh is come before Me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth." 9.1. 10. Septuagint, 2 Maccabees, 7.6 (2nd cent. BCE - 2nd cent. BCE)

7.6. The Lord God is watching over us and in truth has compassion on us, as Moses declared in his song which bore witness against the people to their faces, when he said, `And he will have compassion on his servants.''
11. Septuagint, Ecclesiasticus (Siracides), 2.2, 3.31, 4.3, 6.8, 6.18-6.37, 14.17, 15.14, 15.17, 16.30, 17.1, 17.3-17.14, 17.17, 18.21, 19.9, 22.16, 24.8-24.12, 24.28, 25.24, 33.7-33.15, 37.3-37.4, 38.13, 39.16-39.35, 40.1, 40.23, 49.16 (2nd cent. BCE - 2nd cent. BCE)

2.2. Set your heart right and be steadfast, and do not be hasty in time of calamity. 3.31. Whoever requites favors gives thought to the future;at the moment of his falling he will find support. 4.3. Do not add to the troubles of an angry mind, nor delay your gift to a beggar. 4.3. Do not be like a lion in your home, nor be a faultfinder with your servants. 14.17. All living beings become old like a garment, for the decree from of old is, "You must surely die! 15.14. It was he who created man in the beginning, and he left him in the power of his own inclination. 15.17. Before a man are life and death, and whichever he chooses will be given to him. 17.1. The Lord created man out of earth, and turned him back to it again. 17.1. And they will praise his holy name,to proclaim the grandeur of his works. 17.3. He endowed them with strength like his own,and made them in his own image. 17.4. He placed the fear of them in all living beings, and granted them dominion over beasts and birds. 17.6. He made for them tongue and eyes;he gave them ears and a mind for thinking. 17.7. He filled them with knowledge and understanding, and showed them good and evil. 17.8. He set his eye upon their hearts to show them the majesty of his works. 17.11. He bestowed knowledge upon them, and allotted to them the law of life. 17.12. He established with them an eternal covet, and showed them his judgments. 17.13. Their eyes saw his glorious majesty, and their ears heard the glory of his voice. 17.14. And he said to them, "Beware of all unrighteousness." And he gave commandment to each of them concerning his neighbor. 17.17. He appointed a ruler for every nation, but Israel is the Lords own portion. 18.21. Before falling ill, humble yourself, and when you are on the point of sinning, turn back. 19.9. for some one has heard you and watched you,and when the time comes he will hate you. 22.16. A wooden beam firmly bonded into a building will not be torn loose by an earthquake;so the mind firmly fixed on a reasonable counsel will not be afraid in a crisis. 22.16. Two sorts of men multiply sins, and a third incurs wrath. The soul heated like a burning fire will not be quenched until it is consumed;a man who commits fornication with his near of kin will never cease until the fire burns him up. 24.8. Then the Creator of all things gave me a commandment, and the one who created me assigned a place for my tent. And he said, `Make your dwelling in Jacob, and in Israel receive your inheritance. 24.9. From eternity, in the beginning, he created me,and for eternity I shall not cease to exist. 24.11. In the beloved city likewise he gave me a resting place, and in Jerusalem was my dominion. 24.12. So I took root in an honored people,in the portion of the Lord, who is their inheritance. 24.28. Just as the first man did not know her perfectly, the last one has not fathomed her; 25.24. From a woman sin had its beginning, and because of her we all die. 33.7. Why is any day better than another, when all the daylight in the year is from the sun? 33.8. By the Lords decision they were distinguished, and he appointed the different seasons and feasts; 33.9. some of them he exalted and hallowed, and some of them he made ordinary days. 33.11. In the fulness of his knowledge the Lord distinguished them and appointed their different ways; 33.12. some of them he blessed and exalted, and some of them he made holy and brought near to himself;but some of them he cursed and brought low,and he turned them out of their place. 33.13. As clay in the hand of the potter -- for all his ways are as he pleases -- so men are in the hand of him who made them,to give them as he decides. 33.14. Good is the opposite of evil, and life the opposite of death;so the sinner is the opposite of the godly. 33.15. Look upon all the works of the Most High;they likewise are in pairs, one the opposite of the other. 37.3. O evil imagination, why were you formed to cover the land with deceit? 37.3. for overeating brings sickness, and gluttony leads to nausea. 37.4. Some companions rejoice in the happiness of a friend, but in time of trouble are against him. 38.13. There is a time when success lies in the hands of physicians 39.16. All things are the works of the Lord, for they are very good, and whatever he commands will be done in his time. 39.17. No one can say, "What is this?" "Why is that?" for in Gods time all things will be sought after. At his word the waters stood in a heap, and the reservoirs of water at the word of his mouth. 39.18. At his command whatever pleases him is done, and none can limit his saving power. 39.19. The works of all flesh are before him,and nothing can be hid from his eyes. 39.21. No one can say, "What is this?" "Why is that?" for everything has been created for its use. 39.22. His blessing covers the dry land like a river, and drenches it like a flood. 39.23. The nations will incur his wrath, just as he turns fresh water into salt. 39.24. To the holy his ways are straight, just as they are obstacles to the wicked. 39.25. From the beginning good things were created for good people, just as evil things for sinners. 39.26. Basic to all the needs of mans life are water and fire and iron and salt and wheat flour and milk and honey, the blood of the grape, and oil and clothing. 39.27. All these are for good to the godly, just as they turn into evils for sinners. 39.28. There are winds that have been created for vengeance, and in their anger they scourge heavily;in the time of consummation they will pour out their strength and calm the anger of their Maker. 39.29. Fire and hail and famine and pestilence, all these have been created for vengeance; 39.31. they will rejoice in his commands, and be made ready on earth for their service, and when their times come they will not transgress his word. 39.32. Therefore from the beginning I have been convinced, and have thought this out and left it in writing: 39.33. The works of the Lord are all good, and he will supply every need in its hour. 39.34. And no one can say, "This is worse than that," for all things will prove good in their season. 39.35. So now sing praise with all your heart and voice, and bless the name of the Lord. 40.1. Much labor was created for every man,and a heavy yoke is upon the sons of Adam, from the day they come forth from their mothers womb till the day they return to the mother of all. 40.1. All these were created for the wicked, and on their account the flood came. 40.23. A friend or a companion never meets one amiss, but a wife with her husband is better than both. 49.16. Shem and Seth were honored among men,and Adam above every living being in the creation.
12. Septuagint, Wisdom of Solomon, 1.12, 1.16, 2.23, 3.1, 3.4, 4.16, 6.7, 6.18, 7.1, 7.6, 7.26, 14.3, 15.7-15.13, 17.1-17.8, 25.24 (2nd cent. BCE - 1st cent. BCE)

1.12. Do not invite death by the error of your life, nor bring on destruction by the works of your hands; 1.16. But ungodly men by their words and deeds summoned death;considering him a friend, they pined away, and they made a covet with him, because they are fit to belong to his party. 2.23. for God created man for incorruption, and made him in the image of his own eternity 3.1. But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God,and no torment will ever touch them. 3.4. For though in the sight of men they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. 4.16. The righteous man who had died will condemn the ungodly who are living, and youth that is quickly perfected will condemn the prolonged old age of the unrighteous man. 6.7. For the Lord of all will not stand in awe of any one,nor show deference to greatness;because he himself made both small and great, and he takes thought for all alike. 6.18. and love of her is the keeping of her laws, and giving heed to her laws is assurance of immortality 7.1. I also am mortal, like all men,a descendant of the first-formed child of earth;and in the womb of a mother I was molded into flesh 7.6. there is for all mankind one entrance into life, and a common departure. 7.26. For she is a reflection of eternal light,a spotless mirror of the working of God,and an image of his goodness. 14.3. but it is thy providence, O Father, that steers its course, because thou hast given it a path in the sea,and a safe way through the waves 15.7. For when a potter kneads the soft earth and laboriously molds each vessel for our service,he fashions out of the same clay both the vessels that serve clean uses and those for contrary uses, making all in like manner;but which shall be the use of each of these the worker in clay decides. 15.8. With misspent toil, he forms a futile god from the same clay -- this man who was made of earth a short time before and after a little while goes to the earth from which he was taken, when he is required to return the soul that was lent him. 15.9. But he is not concerned that he is destined to die or that his life is brief, but he competes with workers in gold and silver, and imitates workers in copper;and he counts it his glory that he molds counterfeit gods. 15.10. His heart is ashes, his hope is cheaper than dirt, and his life is of less worth than clay 15.11. because he failed to know the one who formed him and inspired him with an active soul and breathed into him a living spirit. 15.12. But he considered our existence an idle game, and life a festival held for profit, for he says one must get money however one can, even by base means. 15.13. For this man, more than all others, knows that he sins when he makes from earthy matter fragile vessels and graven images. 17.1. Great are thy judgments and hard to describe;therefore unintructed souls have gone astray. 17.2. For when lawless men supposed that they held the holy nation in their power, they themselves lay as captives of darkness and prisoners of long night, shut in under their roofs, exiles from eternal providence. 17.3. For thinking that in their secret sins they were unobserved behind a dark curtain of forgetfulness, they were scattered, terribly alarmed, and appalled by specters. 17.4. For not even the inner chamber that held them protected them from fear, but terrifying sounds rang out around them, and dismal phantoms with gloomy faces appeared. 17.5. And no power of fire was able to give light, nor did the brilliant flames of the stars avail to illumine that hateful night. 17.6. Nothing was shining through to them except a dreadful, self-kindled fire, and in terror they deemed the things which they saw to be worse than that unseen appearance. 17.7. The delusions of their magic art lay humbled, and their boasted wisdom was scornfully rebuked. 17.8. For those who promised to drive off the fears and disorders of a sick soul were sick themselves with ridiculous fear.
13. Septuagint, 4 Maccabees, 9.24, 13.19, 17.22 (2nd cent. BCE - 2nd cent. BCE)

9.24. Fight the sacred and noble battle for religion. Thereby the just Providence of our ancestors may become merciful to our nation and take vengeance on the accursed tyrant. 13.19. You are not ignorant of the affection of brotherhood, which the divine and all-wise Providence has bequeathed through the fathers to their descendants and which was implanted in the mother's womb. 17.22. And through the blood of those devout ones and their death as an expiation, divine Providence preserved Israel that previously had been afflicted.
14. Septuagint, 3 Maccabees, 4.21, 5.30 (2nd cent. BCE - 2nd cent. BCE)

4.21. But this was an act of the invincible providence of him who was aiding the Jews from heaven.
15. Philo of Alexandria, On The Creation of The World, 152, 165, 24-25, 77-88, 151 (1st cent. BCE - 1st cent. CE)

151. But since nothing in creation lasts for ever, but all mortal things are liable to inevitable changes and alterations, it was unavoidable that the first man should also undergo some disaster. And the beginning of his life being liable to reproach, was his wife. For, as long as he was single, he resembled, as to his creation, both the world and God; and he represented in his soul the characteristics of the nature of each, I do not mean all of them, but such as a mortal constitution was capable of admitting. But when woman also was created, man perceiving a closely connected figure and a kindred formation to his own, rejoiced at the sight, and approached her and embraced her.
16. Philo of Alexandria, Who Is The Heir, 7 (1st cent. BCE - 1st cent. CE)

7. When therefore is it proper for the servant of God to use freedom of speech to the ruler and master of himself, and of the whole word? Is it not when he is free from all sins, and is aware in his conscience that he loves his master, feeling more joy at the fact of being a servant of God, than he would if he were sovereign over the whole race of mankind, and were invested without any effort on his part with the supreme authority over land and sea.
17. Anon., 2 Baruch, 14.17-14.19 (1st cent. CE - 2nd cent. CE)

18. New Testament, 1 Corinthians, 15.21, 15.49-15.50 (1st cent. CE - 1st cent. CE)

15.21. For since death came byman, the resurrection of the dead also came by man. 15.49. As we haveborne the image of those made of dust, let's also bear the image of theheavenly. 15.50. Now I say this, brothers, that flesh and blood can'tinherit the Kingdom of God; neither does corruption inheritincorruption.
19. New Testament, 2 Corinthians, 4.4 (1st cent. CE - 1st cent. CE)

20. New Testament, Colossians, 1.15 (1st cent. CE - 1st cent. CE)

1.15. who is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
21. New Testament, Galatians, 1.16 (1st cent. CE - 1st cent. CE)

1.16. to reveal his Son in me,that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I didn't immediately conferwith flesh and blood
22. New Testament, Hebrews, 2.4 (1st cent. CE - 1st cent. CE)

2.4. God also bearing witness with them, both by signs and wonders, and by various works of power, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit, according to his own will?
23. New Testament, Romans, 5.12, 6.23, 8.19-8.21, 8.29 (1st cent. CE - 1st cent. CE)

5.12. Therefore, as sin entered into the world through one man, and death through sin; and so death passed to all men, because all sinned. 6.23. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. 8.19. For the creation waits with eager expectation for the sons of God to be revealed. 8.20. For the creation was subjected to vanity, not of its own will, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 8.21. that the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of decay into the liberty of the glory of the children of God. 8.29. For whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
24. New Testament, Matthew, 16.17 (1st cent. CE - 1st cent. CE)

16.17. Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
25. Tosefta, Sanhedrin, 8.9 (1st cent. CE - 2nd cent. CE)

26. Anon., 4 Ezra, 6.49-6.59, 8.44-8.45

6.53. On the sixth day thou didst command the earth to bring forth before thee cattle, beasts, and creeping things; 6.54. and over these thou didst place Adam, as ruler over all the works which thou hadst made; and from him we have all come, the people whom thou hast chosen. 6.55. All this I have spoken before thee, O Lord, because thou hast said that it was for us that thou didst create this world. 6.56. As for the other nations which have descended from Adam, thou hast said that they are nothing, and that they are like spittle, and thou hast compared their abundance to a drop from a bucket. 6.57. And now, O Lord, behold, these nations, which are reputed as nothing, domineer over us and devour us. 6.58. But we thy people, whom thou hast called thy first-born, only begotten, zealous for thee, and most dear, have been given into their hands. 6.59. If the world has indeed been created for us, why do we not possess our world as an inheritance? How long will this be so? 8.44. But man, who has been formed by thy hands and is called thy own image because he is made like thee, and for whose sake thou hast formed all things -- hast thou also made him like the farmer's seed? 8.45. No, O Lord who art over us! But spare thy people and have mercy on thy inheritance, for thou hast mercy on thy own creation.
