Then Esther the queen answered and said: ‘If I have found favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request;" 7.4. for we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. But if we had been sold for bondmen and bondwomen, I had held my peace, for the adversary is not worthy that the king be endamaged.’" 8.1. On that day did the king Ahasuerus give the house of Haman the Jews’enemy unto Esther the queen. And Mordecai came before the king; for Esther had told what he was unto her." 9.12. And the king said unto Esther the queen: ‘The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the castle, and the ten sons of Haman; what then have they done in the rest of the king’s provinces! Now whatever thy petition, it shall be granted thee; and whatever thy request further, it shall be done.’" 9.13. Then said Esther: ‘If it please the king, let it be granted to the Jews that are in Shushan to do to-morrow also according unto this day’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged upon the gallows.’" 9.14. And the king commanded it so to be done; and a decree was given out in Shushan; and they hanged Haman’s ten sons." 9.29. Then Esther the queen, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew, wrote down all the acts of power, to confirm this second letter of Purim." 9.30. And he sent letters unto all the Jews, to the hundred twenty and seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, with words of peace and truth," 9.31. to confirm these days of Purim in their appointed times, according as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had enjoined them, and as they had ordained for themselves and for their seed, the matters of the fastings and their cry." |

AND IT came to pass in the days when the judges judged, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Beth-lehem in Judah went to sojourn in the field of Moab, he, and his wife, and his two sons." 1.2. And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons Mahlon and Chilion, Ephrathites of Beth-lehem in Judah. And they came into the field of Moab, and continued there." 1.3. And Elimelech Naomi’s husband died; and she was left, and her two sons." 1.4. And they took them wives of the women of Moab: the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth; and they dwelt there about ten years." 1.7. And she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Judah." 1.11. And Naomi said: ‘Turn back, my daughters; why will ye go with me? have I yet sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?" 1.12. Turn back, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say: I have hope, should I even have an husband to-night, and also bear sons;" 1.17. where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried; the LORD do so to me,and more also, if aught but death part thee and me.’" 1.22. So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, with her, who returned out of the field of Moab—and they came to Beth-lehem in the beginning of barley harvest." 2.2. And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi: ‘Let me now go to the field, and glean among the ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall find favour.’ And she said unto her: ‘Go, my daughter.’" 2.6. And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said: ‘It is a Moabitish damsel that came back with Naomi out of the field of Moab;" 2.8. Then said Boaz unto Ruth: ‘Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither pass from hence, but abide here fast by my maidens." 2.13. Then she said: ‘Let me find favour in thy sight, my LORD; for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken to the heart of thy handmaid, though I be not as one of thy handmaidens.’" 2.21. And Ruth the Moabitess said: ‘Yea, he said unto me: Thou shalt keep fast by my young men, until they have ended all my harvest.’" 3.7. And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn; and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down." 3.14. And she lay at his feet until the morning; and she rose up before one could discern another. For he said: ‘Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing-floor.’" 4.5. Then said Boaz: ‘What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Naomi—hast thou also bought of Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance?’" 4.10. Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I acquired to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place; ye are witnesses this day.’" 4.12. and let thy house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore unto Judah, of the seed which the LORD shall give thee of this young woman.’" 4.13. So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife; and he went in unto her, and the LORD gave her conception, and she bore a son." 4.14. And the women said unto Naomi: ‘Blessed be the LORD, who hath not left thee this day without a near kinsman, and let his name be famous in Israel." 4.15. And he shall be unto thee a restorer of life, and a nourisher of thine old age; for thy daughter-in-law, who loveth thee, who is better to thee than seven sons, hath borne him.’" 4.16. And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it." 4.17. And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying: ‘There is a son born to Naomi’; and they called his name Obed; he is the father of Jesse, the father of David." |

And David sent and spoke with Avigayil, to take her to him to wife." 25.40. And when the servants of David were come to Avigayil to the Karmel, they spoke to her, saying, David sent us to thee, to take thee to him to wife." 25.41. 16. Septuagint, Ecclesiasticus (Siracides), 6.6-6.7, 6.9, 6.14-6.16, 13.21-13.23 (2nd cent. BCE - 2nd cent. BCE)
| 13.21. When a rich man totters, he is steadied by friends, but when a humble man falls, he is even pushed away by friends. 13.22. If a rich man slips, his helpers are many;he speaks unseemly words, and they justify him. If a humble man slips, they even reproach him;he speaks sensibly, and receives no attention. 13.23. When the rich man speaks all are silent, and they extol to the clouds what he says. When the poor man speaks they say, "Who is this fellow?" And should he stumble, they even push him down. |

17. Septuagint, Judith, 1.11 (2nd cent. BCE - 0th cent. CE)
| 1.11. But all who lived in the whole region disregarded the orders of Nebuchadnezzar king of the Assyrians, and refused to join him in the war; for they were not afraid of him, but looked upon him as only one man, and they sent back his messengers empty-handed and shamefaced. |

18. Philo of Alexandria, On The Special Laws, 3.25, 3.29-3.30 (1st cent. BCE - 1st cent. CE)
| 3.25. for why should any one seek to deface the beauty of modesty? And why make virgins destitute of all modesty, to whom it is becoming to blush? And, moreover, why should one be willing to limit the associations and connections with other men, and to confine a most honourable thing within the narrow space of the walls of a single house, which ought rather to be extended and diffused over all continents, and islands, and the whole inhabited world? For the intermarriages with strangers produce new relationships, which are in no respect inferior to those which proceed from ties of blood.V. 3.29. Again. Moses commands, do not either form a connection of marriage with one of another nation, and do not be seduced into complying with customs inconsistent with your own, and do not stray from the right way and forget the path which leads to piety, turning into a road which is no road. And, perhaps, you will yourself resist, if you have been from your earliest youth trained in the best possible instruction, which your parents have instilled into you, continually filling your mind with the sacred laws. And the anxiety and fear which parents feel for their sons and daughters is not slight; for, perchance, they may be allured by mischievous customs instead of genuine good ones, and so they may be in danger of learning to forget the honour belonging to the one God, which is the beginning and end of extreme unhappiness. 3.30. But if, proceeds the lawgiver, a woman having been divorced from her husband under any pretence whatever, and having married another, has again become a widow, whether her second husband is alive or dead, still she must not return to her former husband, but may be united to any man in the world rather than to him, having violated her former ties which she forgot, and having chosen new allurements in the place of the old ones. |

19. Josephus Flavius, Jewish Antiquities, 2.201-2.203, 3.63-3.64, 3.274-3.275, 4.244-4.245, 5.321 (1st cent. CE - 1st cent. CE)
| 2.201. 1. Now it happened that the Egyptians grew delicate and lazy, as to painstaking; and gave themselves up to other pleasures, and in particular to the love of gain. They also became very ill-affected towards the Hebrews, as touched with envy at their prosperity; 2.202. for when they saw how the nation of the Israelites flourished, and were become eminent already in plenty of wealth, which they had acquired by their virtue and natural love of labor, they thought their increase was to their own detriment. And having, in length of time, forgotten the benefits they had received from Joseph, particularly the crown being now come into another family, they became very abusive to the Israelites, and contrived many ways of afflicting them; 2.203. for they enjoined them to cut a great number of channels for the river, and to build walls for their cities and ramparts, that they might restrain the river, and hinder its waters from stagnating, upon its running over its own banks: they set them also to build pyramids, and by all this wore them out; and forced them to learn all sorts of mechanical arts, and to accustom themselves to hard labor. 3.63. Now when Raguel, Moses’s father-in-law, understood in what a prosperous condition his affairs were, he willingly came to meet him. And Moses took Zipporah, his wife, and his children, and pleased himself with his coming. And when he had offered sacrifice, he made a feast for the multitude, near the Bush he had formerly seen; 3.64. which multitude, every one according to their families, partook of the feast. But Aaron and his family took Raguel, and sung hymns to God, as to him who had been the author and procurer of their deliverance and their freedom. 3.274. 1. As for adultery, Moses forbade it entirely, as esteeming it a happy thing that men should be wise in the affairs of wedlock; and that it was profitable both to cities and families that children should be known to be genuine. He also abhorred men’s lying with their mothers, as one of the greatest crimes; and the like for lying with the father’s wife, and with aunts, and sisters, and sons’ wives, as all instances of abominable wickedness. 3.275. He also forbade a man to lie with his wife when she was defiled by her natural purgation: and not to come near brute beasts; nor to approve of the lying with a male, which was to hunt after unlawful pleasures on account of beauty. To those who were guilty of such insolent behavior, he ordained death for their punishment. 4.244. 23. Let the Hebrews marry, at the age fit for it, virgins that are free, and born of good parents. And he that does not marry a virgin, let him not corrupt another man’s wife, and marry her, nor grieve her former husband. Nor let free men marry slaves, although their affections should strongly bias any of them so to do; for it is decent, and for the dignity of the persons themselves, to govern those their affections. 4.245. And further, no one ought to marry a harlot, whose matrimonial oblations, arising from the prostitution of her body, God will not receive; for by these means the dispositions of the children will be liberal and virtuous; I mean, when they are not born of base parents, and of the lustful conjunction of such as marry women that are not free. 5.321. However, her daughters-in-law were not able to think of parting with her; and when they had a mind to go out of the country with her, she could not dissuade them from it; but when they insisted upon it, she wished them a more happy wedlock than they had with her sons, and that they might have prosperity in other respects also; |

| 87.7. \"One such day, he [Yosef] came into the house to do his work and none of the men of the household were there\" (Genesis 39:11). Is it possible that in the house of such a man it was deserted with no man there? Rabbi Yehuda and Rabbi Nechemyah [explain this]. Rabbi Yehuda says, it was a Nile festival and all had gone to see it, and he did not go. Rabbi Nechemyah says, it was a day of the theatre [ iteiatiron /i] and all had gone to see it, and he did not go. Rather, \"he came into the house to do his work\", to calculate his master's calculations. Rabbi Shmuel son of Nachman says, \"to do his work literally\", except there was no man there -- he searched himself, and he did not find himself to be a man. Another explanation, Rabbi Shmuel says, the bow is stretched and returned. For is it not written: (Genesis 49:24) \"Yet his bow [קשתו] remained taut\" -- his hardness [קשיותו]. Rabbi Yitzchak says, his seed [זרע] was scattered and went out by way of his fingernails, as it says (Genesis 49:24) \"and the arms of his hands [זרעי ידיו] were made firm\". Rav Huna in the name of Rabbi Matna says, images of his father appeared and chilled his blood, as it is written (Genesis 49:24) \"From there, the Shepherd, the Rock of Yisrael\". Who does such? (Genesis 49:25) \"The God of your father who helps you [...] blessings of breast and womb\" -- (Onkelos Genesis 49:25) \"blessings of father and mother.\"" |

23. Anon., Midrash On Song of Songs, 1.1
| 1.1. Regarding the verse that was written by Shlomo which says, \"See a man that is diligent with his labor, before Kings he will stand; he will not stand before mean men.\" \"See a man diligent with his labor\", this is Joseph, as it is written about him: \"And he went to the house to perform his labor (Genesis 39).\" Rabbi Judah and Rabbi Nehemiah...Rabbi Judah says, \"It was a disgraceful day, it was a festival, a day of performances.\" Rabbi Nehemiah says, \"It was a day of performances of the Nile River, they all went to look at it. He (Joseph) entered to perform his labor, to calculate the calculations of his Master.\" Rabbi Phineas says in the name of Rabbi Samuel bar Abba, \"Everyone that serves his master properly, he will go out to freedom. From where do we learn this? From Joseph! Through his serving his master fittingly, he went out to freedom. Therefore, \"Before kings he will stand\", that is Pharaoh, as it says, \"And Pharaoh sent, and they called Joseph and they brought him up from the pit (Genesis 41).\" \"He will not stand before mean men\", that is Potiphar, for The Holy One Blessed Be He darkened(lit., i.e. blinded) his eyes and castrated him." |

24. Anon., Ruthrabbah, 2.22
| 2.22. It is written: \" bFor he who is reckoned among the living has something to look forward to—even a live dog is better than a dead lion(Ecclesiastes 9:4)\". The tannaim taught: \"The one who sees an idol, what does he say? \"Blessed is the one who gives compassion to those who transgress his will\". A place where idolatry has been torn out from it? \"Blessed is the one who tears out idolatry from our land. And thus may it be your will, Hashem, our God, that you tear it our from every place and you will turn the heart of those who serve it to your service with a whole heart\". But is one not found to pray for the wicked? Rabbi Yocha says: \"it is written \" bchosen ( iyevuhar\"reckoned\") /b\". Even all those who stretched for their hands against the Temple, there is hope for them. To resurrect them, it is not possible as they already stretched forth their hands to the Temple. To destroy them is not possible since they have already made repentance. He says about them: \"And then sleep an endless sleep, never to awake (Jeremiah 51:39)\". \" bEven a live dog is better than a dead lion(Ecclesiastes 9:4)\": in this world he who is a dog may be made into a lion and he who is a lion may be made into a dog. But, in the one to come, he who is a lion will not be able to be made a dog, and everyone who is a dog will not be able to be made into a lion. The Emperor Hadrian, may his bones rot, asked Rabbi Joshua son of Chayah, and he said to him: \"I am better than Moses, your rabbi.\" And Joshua said to him: \"Why?\" \"Because I am alive and he is dead, as it is written \" bEven a live dog is better than a dead lion /b\". He said to him, are you able to decree that no one kindle a light for three days?\" Hadrian said: \"Yes\". In the evening they went together onto the roof of the palace, and they saw smoke from a distance! He said to him: \"What's this?\" And Hadrian replied to him: \"a sick ieparchcame and the doctor saw him and said to him \"Only if you drink hot water he will get better\"\". And he said to him: \"May his spirit die, as your decree while you are alive is nullified, and Moses, our Rabbi, from the time that he decreed on us \"You shall kindle no fire throughout your settlements on the sabbath day (Exodus 35:3)\" no Jew lights a light on the day of Shabbat, and even now his decree is not nullified, but you said \"I am better than him!\"\". \" bTell me, O Hashem, what my term is, what is the measure of my days; I would know how fleeting my life is(Psalm 39:5)\". David said before the Holy One, Blessed is He: \"Lord of the world make know to me bwhen I will die /b\". God said to him: \"That is a secret and it is not revealed to a human and it is not possible to reveal it to you.\" David: \"And the bmeasure of my days /b, what are they?\" God said to him \"Seventy\". David: \"I would know, bwhat is my end /b? Reveal to me on what day I will die.\" God said to him: \"On Shabbat\". And he said to him: \"Subtract one day for me\". God said to him: \"No\". David asked \"Why?\". God said to him: \"Precious to me is one prayer which you stand and pray before me than a thousand offerings that Solomon your son is going to bring before me, as it is said: \"on that altar Solomon presented a thousand burnt offerings (1 Kings 3:4)\". And David said to God: \"Then add a day for me\". God said to him \"No\". And David asked \"Why?\" He said to him: \"The era of your son is pressing\". About this Rabbi Shimon son of Abba in the name of Rabbi Yocha: \"Eras are eras and one of them cannot meet in the middle of the era of its neighbor, even a little bit\". And David died on Atzeret [Shavuot] that was on Shabbat, and the Sanhedrin went out to meet with Solomon and he said to them: \"move him here and there\". They responded to him: \"This is the Mishnah: they anoint and wash so long as it is not moved (Shabbat 23:5)\". And Solomon said: \"The dogs of my father's house are hungry\". And they said to him: \"This is the Mishnah: they cut up gourds before an animal, a corpse, and before dogs (Shabbat 24:4)\". What did he do? He stretched out a canopy and spread it out over him so the sun would not descend and there are those who say that he called eagles and they spread out over him their wings so that the sun would not descend on him." |
