And Moses led Israel onward from the Red Sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water." 15.23. And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore the name of it was called Marah." 15.24. And the people murmured against Moses, saying: ‘What shall we drink?’" 15.25. Then said the LORD unto Moses: ‘Behold, I will cause to rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in My law, or not." 17.1. And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, by their stages, according to the commandment of the LORD, and encamped in Rephidim; and there was no water for the people to drink." 17.2. Wherefore the people strove with Moses, and said: ‘Give us water that we may drink.’ And Moses said unto them: ‘Why strive ye with me? wherefore do ye try the LORD?’" 17.3. And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said: ‘Wherefore hast thou brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?’" 17.4. And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying: ‘What shall I do unto this people? they are almost ready to stone me.’" 17.5. And the LORD said unto Moses: ‘Pass on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thy hand, and go." 17.6. Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink.’ And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel." 17.7. And the name of the place was called Massah, and Meribah, because of the striving of the children of Israel, and because they tried the LORD, saying: ‘Is the LORD among us, or not?’" 20.22. Arise, O LORD, in Thine anger, Lift up Thyself in indignation against mine adversaries; Yea, awake for me at the judgment which Thou hast commanded." 9.19. For the needy shall not alway be forgotten, Nor the expectation of the poor perish for ever." 9.20. Arise, O LORD, let not man prevail; Let the nations be judged in Thy sight." 10.12. Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up Thy hand; Forget not the humble." 17.13. Arise, O LORD, confront him, cast him down; Deliver my soul from the wicked, by Thy sword;" 24.2. For He hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods." 24.7. Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lifted up, ye everlasting doors; that the King of glory may come in." 24.8. 'Who is the King of glory?' 'The LORD strong and mighty, The LORD mighty in battle.'" 24.9. Lift up your heads, O ye gates, Yea, lift them up, ye everlasting doors; That the King of glory may come in." 24.10. 'Who then is the King of glory?' 'The LORD of hosts; He is the King of glory.' Selah" 48.3. Fair in situation, the joy of the whole earth; Even mount Zion, the uttermost parts of the north, The city of the great King." 48.7. Trembling took hold of them there, Pangs, as of a woman in travail." 48.9. As we have heard, so have we seen In the city of the LORD of hosts, in the city of our God— God establish it for ever. Selah" 48.12. Let mount Zion be glad, Let the daughters of Judah rejoice, Because of Thy judgments." 74.22. Arise, O God, plead Thine own cause; Remember Thy reproach all the day at the hand of the base man." 77.18. The clouds flooded forth waters; The skies sent out a sound; Thine arrows also went abroad." 78.15. He cleaved rocks in the wilderness, And gave them drink abundantly as out of the great deep." 78.16. He brought streams also out of the rock, And caused waters to run down like rivers." 78.18. And they tried God in their heart By asking food for their craving." 78.19. Yea, they spoke against God; They said 'Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?" 78.20. Behold, He smote the rock, that waters gushed out, And streams overflowed; Can He give bread also? Or will He provide flesh for His people?'" 78.21. Therefore the LORD heard, and was wroth; And a fire was kindled against Jacob, And anger also went up against Israel;" 78.22. Because they believed not in God, And trusted not in His salvation." 78.23. And He commanded the skies above, And opened the doors of heaven;" 78.24. And He caused manna to rain upon them for food, And gave them of the corn of heaven." 78.25. Man did eat the bread of the mighty; He sent them provisions to the full." 78.56. Yet they tried and provoked God, the Most High, And kept not His testimonies;" 80.8. O God of hosts, restore us; And cause Thy face to shine, and we shall be saved." 81.3. Take up the melody, and sound the timbrel, the sweet harp with the psaltery." 81.4. Blow the horn at the new moon, at the full moon for our feast-day." 81.5. For it is a statute for Israel, an ordice of the God of Jacob." 81.6. He appointed it in Joseph for a testimony, when He went forth against the land of Egypt. The speech of one that I knew not did I hear:" 81.9. Hear, O My people, and I will admonish thee: O Israel, if thou wouldest hearken unto Me!" 81.12. But My people hearkened not to My voice; And Israel would none of Me." 82.8. Arise, O God, judge the earth; for Thou shalt possess all the nations." 92.12. Mine eye also hath gazed on them that lie in wait for me, Mine ears have heard my desire of the evil-doers that rise up against me." 92.13. The righteous shall flourish like the palm-tree; He shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon." 92.14. Planted in the house of the LORD, They shall flourish in the courts of our God." 92.15. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; They shall be full of sap and richness;" 93.1. The LORD reigneth; He is clothed in majesty; The LORD is clothed, He hath girded Himself with strength; Yea, the world is established, that it cannot be moved." 93.2. Thy throne is established of old; Thou art from everlasting." 93.3. The floods have lifted up, O LORD, The floods have lifted up their voice; The floods lift up their roaring." 93.4. Above the voices of many waters, The mighty breakers of the sea, The LORD on high is mighty." 94.2. Lift up Thyself, Thou Judge of the earth; Render to the proud their recompense." 94.7. And they say: 'The LORD will not see, Neither will the God of Jacob give heed.'" 94.8. Consider, ye brutish among the people; And ye fools, when will ye understand?" 94.9. He that planted the ear, shall He not hear? He that formed the eye, shall He not see?" 94.10. He that instructeth nations, shall not He correct? Even He that teacheth man knowledge?" 94.11. The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, That they are vanity." 94.14. For the LORD will not cast off His people, Neither will He forsake His inheritance." 94.17. Unless the LORD had been my help, My soul had soon dwelt in silence." 94.18. If I say: 'My foot slippeth', Thy mercy, O LORD, holdeth me up." 94.19. When my cares are many within me, Thy comforts delight my soul." 95.8. 'Harden not your heart, as at Meribah, As in the day of Massah in the wilderness;" 95.9. When your fathers tried Me, Proved Me, even though they saw My work." 95.10. For forty years was I wearied with that generation, And said: It is a people that do err in their heart, And they have not known My ways;" 95.11. Wherefore I swore in My wrath, That they should not enter into My arest.'" 105.41. He opened the rock, and waters gushed out; They ran, a river in the dry places." 106.32. They angered Him also at the waters of Meribah, And it went ill with Moses because of them;"
6. Hebrew Bible, Isaiah, 14.22, 26.20-26.21, 35.4, 51.9 (8th cent. BCE - 5th cent. BCE)

And I will rise up against them, saith the LORD of hosts, and cut off from Babylon name and remt, and offshoot and offspring, saith the LORD." 26.20. Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, And shut thy doors about thee; Hide thyself for a little moment, Until the indignation be overpast." 26.21. For, behold, the LORD cometh forth out of His place To visit upon the inhabitants of the earth their iniquity; The earth also shall disclose her blood, And shall no more cover her slain." 35.4. Say to them that are of a fearful heart: ‘Be strong, fear not’; Behold, your God will come with vengeance, With the recompense of God He will come and save you." 51.9. Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD; Awake, as in the days of old, The generations of ancient times. Art thou not it that hewed Rahab in pieces, That pierced the dragon?"
7. Anon., 1 Enoch, 94.9, 97.2, 98.7, 99.3, 99.16, 100.4 (3rd cent. BCE - 2nd cent. BCE)

94.9. Ye have committed blasphemy and unrighteousness, And have become ready for the day of slaughter, And the day of darkness and the day of the great judgement. 97.2. Be it known unto you (ye sinners) that the Most High is mindful of your destruction, And the angels of heaven rejoice over your destruction. 98.7. And do not think in your spirit nor say in your heart that ye do not know and that ye do not see 99.3. In those days make ready, ye righteous, to raise your prayers as a memorial, And place them as a testimony before the angels, That they may place the sin of the sinners for a memorial before the Most High. 99.16. For He shall cast down your glory, And bring affliction on your hearts, And shall arouse His fierce indignation And destroy you all with the sword; And all the holy and righteous shall remember your sins. 100.4. In those days the angels shall descend into the secret places And gather together into one place all those who brought down sin And the Most High will arise on that day of judgement To execute great judgement amongst sinners.
8. Septuagint, Judith, 5.10-5.16 (2nd cent. BCE - 0th cent. CE)

5.10. When a famine spread over Canaan they went down to Egypt and lived there as long as they had food; and there they became a great multitude -- so great that they could not be counted. 5.11. So the king of Egypt became hostile to them; he took advantage of them and set them to making bricks, and humbled them and made slaves of them. 5.12. Then they cried out to their God, and he afflicted the whole land of Egypt with incurable plagues; and so the Egyptians drove them out of their sight. 5.13. Then God dried up the Red Sea before them 5.14. and he led them by the way of Sinai and Kadesh-barnea, and drove out all the people of the wilderness. 5.15. So they lived in the land of the Amorites, and by their might destroyed all the inhabitants of Heshbon; and crossing over the Jordan they took possession of all the hill country. 5.16. And they drove out before them the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Jebusites and the Shechemites and all the Gergesites, and lived there a long time.
