1.196. The same man describes our city Jerusalem also itself as of a most excellent structure, and very large, and inhabited from the most ancient times. From Jericho they could hear the sound of the shofar. Some say also of the high priest when he pronounced the divine name on Yom Kippur. From Jericho they could smell the odor of the compounding of incense. Rabbi Elazar ben Diglai said: my father had some goats in Har Michvar, and they would sneeze from the smell of the incense." 5.2. He said to them: those who are new to the incense come and draw lots, and who ever won, won. He then said: new and old, come and draw lots to see who shall take up the limbs from the ascent to the altar. Rabbi Eliezer ben Jacob says: the one who brought the limbs on to the ascent also takes them up to the altar." 7.2. They went and stood on the steps of the Sanctuary. The first ones stood at the south side of their fellow priests with five vessels in their hands: one held the teni, the second the kuz, the third the firepan, the fourth the dish, and the fifth the spoon and its covering. They blessed the people with a single blessing, except in the country they recited it as three blessings, in the Temple as one. In the Temple they pronounced the divine name as it is written, but in the country by its substitute. In the country the priests raised their hands as high as their shoulders, but in the Temple above their heads, except the high priest, who did not raise his hands above the diadem. Rabbi Judah says: the high priest also raised his hands above the diadem, since it says, “And Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed them” (Leviticus 9:22)." 7.4. The following are the psalms that were chanted in the Temple.On the first day they used to say, “The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, the world and they that dwell therein” (Psalms. On the second day they used to say: “Great is the Lord and highly to be praised, in the city of our God. His holy mountain” (Psalms. On the third day they used to say: “God stands in the congregation of God, in the midst of the judges he judges” (Psalms. On the fourth day they used to say: “O Lord, God to whom vengeance belongs. God to whom vengeance belongs, shine forth” (Psalms. On the fifth day they used to say: “Sing aloud unto God our strength, shout unto the God of Jacob” (Psalms. On the sixth day they used to say: “The lord reigns, he is clothed in majesty, the Lord is clothed, He has girded himself with strength” (Psalms. On Shabbat they used to say: “A psalm, a song for the Sabbath day” (Psalms. A psalm, a song for the time to come, for the day that will be all Shabbat and rest for everlasting life. Congratulations! We have finished Tractate Tamid! It is a tradition at this point to thank God for helping us finish learning the tractate and to commit ourselves to going back and relearning it, so that we may not forget it and so that its lessons will stay with us for all of our lives. Tamid may have been one of the more unusual tractates that we have ever learned. Instead of disputes between sages, heaps of logic and laws, we get an intricate description of the Temple service. Indeed, although the language is clearly rabbinic Hebrew, its descriptive style is more characteristic of the Bible than of rabbinic literature. It is likely that these descriptions, or at least parts thereof, come from Temple times. They were preserved because the rabbis fervently hoped that the Temple would be rebuilt during their own lifetimes. While we may or may not share in this wish, I think we can all appreciate the respect in which they held this ceremony. Despite the fact that it was performed each and every day, twice every day, they don’t seem to have lost their sense of wonder at the intimate connection that they received with God through the sacrificial process. I am the Lord your God” (Numbers 10:10), indicating that one blast is sounded for all. The Gemara suggests: This is ba conclusive refutationof the opinion bof Rabbi Aḥa.The Gemara concludes: Indeed, it is ba conclusive refutation. /b,Since the ibaraitawas cited, the Gemara asks: bWhat is the derivationcited in this ibaraita /i? How does the phrase: And on your New Moons, prove that the trumpets are sounded once for all the additional offerings? bAbaye said: The verse states: “And on your New Moons,”in plural, indicating that ball the months are equated to each other,and just as on a typical New Moon the trumpets are sounded once for the additional offering, so too when Shabbat and the New Moon coincide the trumpets are sounded once and no more. bRav Ashi saidthat in this verse bit is written: Your moon [ iḥodshekhem /i],without a iyod /i, in the singular, bandin the same verse bit is written: “And onyour bnew [ iuverashei /i],”in the plural. bAnd whichis the bmonth that has two newbeginnings? bYou must say it is Rosh HaShana,which is the beginning of both the new year and the new month. bAndyet bthe Merciful One says: Your moon,in the singular, indicating bit is oneand the trumpets are sounded once., bAnd furthermore,contrary to the statement of Rabbi Aḥa, bit was taughtin a ibaraita /i: bOn the intermediate days of the Festival, on the firstday, bwhat would they sayas the song accompanying the offering on that day? b“Ascribe [ ihavu /i] unto the Lord, O you sons of might”(Psalms 29:1). bOn the secondday, bwhat would they say?The psalm that contains the verse: b“But unto the wicked [ ivelarasha /i] God says:What have you to do to declare My statutes?” (Psalms 50:16). bOn the thirdday, bwhat would they say?The psalm containing the verse: b“Who [ imi /i] will rise up for me against the evildoers?”(Psalms 94:16)., bOn the fourthday, bwhat would they say? “Consider [ ibinu /i], you brutish among the people”(Psalms 94:8). bOn the fifthday, bwhat would they say? “I removed [ ihasiroti /i] his shoulder from the burden”(Psalms 81:7). bOn the sixthday, bwhat would they say? “All the foundations of the earth are moved [ iyimotu /i]”(Psalms 82:5). bAnd if Shabbat occurred on anyof the intermediate days of the Festival, since Shabbat has its own song (Psalms 92), the last of the songs of the intermediate days, i.e., “All the foundations of the earth bare moved,” is superseded,and all the other songs are recited in their proper sequence., bRav Safra established a mnemonic forthe sequence of the psalms recited during the intermediate days of the Festival: iHeh /i, ivav /i, imem /i, ibeit /i, iheh /i, iyod /i,the first letters of the transliterated word in the verses cited. bRav Pappa established adifferent bmnemonic fora different sequence of the Psalms: iHeh /i, ivav /i, imem /i, iheh /i, ibeit /i, iyod /i,as in his opinion, the psalm containing: “I removed” is recited before the psalm containing: “Consider.” The Gemara notes: bA mnemonicto identify which iamoraestablished which mnemonic is the expression: bConvoy [ iambuha /i] of scribes [ idesafrei /i],as the spelling of iambuhais like the mnemonic of Rav Safra.,The Gemara concludes: This ibaraitais ba conclusive refutationof the opinion bof Rabbi Aḥa bar Ḥanina,as on Shabbat the song for Shabbat was recited alone without the song for the Festival, and similarly, separate trumpet blasts are not sounded for the various additional offerings. Rabbi Aḥa’s opinion was rejected based on several sources. The Gemara asks: bBut didn’t Rabbi Aḥa say a verse and a ibaraita /iin support of his opinion? How can those citations be rejected?, bRavina said:The verse and the ibaraitathat he cited do not teach that trumpet blasts were sounded for each additional offering. Rather, they come bto say that one extendsthe duration bof the blaststo honor the added additional offerings, but does not sound even one additional blast. bThe Sages of Caesarea, in the name of Rabbi Aḥa, said:The verse and the ibaraitacited by Rabbi Aḥa come bto say that one increasesthe number of btrumpetersto honor the added additional offerings, but not the number of blasts sounded.,Apropos the psalms recited during the Festival, the Gemara asks: bAnd we,outside Eretz Yisrael, bwho have two daysof Festival due to the uncertainty, as well as uncertainty with regard to each of the intermediate days, bhow do we conductourselves with regard to the mention of the additional offerings in the additional prayer of the Festival during the intermediate days, and with regard to Torah reading on those days? bAbaye said:Mention of bthe secondday bwill be superseded.Since the first of the intermediate days outside Eretz Yisrael is the third day of the Festival in Eretz Yisrael, the additional offering for the third day alone is mentioned, and the offerings for the fourth day on the fourth day, etc. No mention is made of the second day outside Eretz Yisrael., bRava said:Mention of the bseventhday bwill be superseded.On the first of the intermediate days outside Eretz Yisrael, the third day of the Festival, the passage beginning “And on the second day” (Numbers 29:17) is mentioned in the additional iAmidaprayer and read in the Torah, and on each succeeding day the succeeding passage is mentioned and read. There is no mention of the seventh day on the eighth day, as that is no longer iSukkotbut rather the Eighth Day of Assembly. The Gemara notes: A ibaraita bwas taught in accordance withthe opinion of bRava: And if Shabbat occurs on anyof the intermediate days of the Festival, the song of the seventh day of iSukkot /i: “All the foundations of the earth bare moved,” is superseded. /b,The Gemara cites a third opinion: bAmeimar instituted inhis city of bNeharde’a thatduring the intermediate days, bone repeatsthe second of the additional offerings that he mentioned the day before and adds the additional offerings of the subsequent day. On the first of the intermediate days in the Diaspora, one mentions the additional offerings of both the second and third days of iSukkot /i. On the second of the intermediate days, one repeats the verses of the third day of iSukkotand adds the verses of the fourth day.
