אֵיכָה יָעִיב בְּאַפּוֹ אֲדֹנָי אֶת־בַּת־צִיּוֹן הִשְׁלִיךְ מִשָּׁמַיִם אֶרֶץ תִּפְאֶרֶת יִשְׂרָאֵל וְלֹא־זָכַר הֲדֹם־רַגְלָיו בְּיוֹם אַפּוֹ׃

How hath the Lord covered with a cloud The daughter of Zion in His anger! He hath cast down from heaven unto the earth The beauty of Israel, And hath not remembered His footstool In the day of His anger.

וּשְׂנוּאָה וְאֵין עוֹבֵר וְשַׂמְתִּיךְ לִגְאוֹן עוֹלָם מְשׂוֹשׂ דּוֹר וָדוֹר׃ 60.16. וְיָנַקְתְּ חֲלֵב גּוֹיִם וְשֹׁד מְלָכִים תִּינָקִי וְיָדַעַתְּ כִּי אֲנִי יְהוָה מוֹשִׁיעֵךְ וְגֹאֲלֵךְ אֲבִיר יַעֲקֹב׃

1.10. Hear the word of the LORD, Ye rulers of Sodom; Give ear unto the law of our God, Ye people of Gomorrah." 1.11. To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto Me? Saith the LORD; I am full of the burnt-offerings of rams, And the fat of fed beasts; And I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he-goats." 1.12. When ye come to appear before Me, Who hath required this at your hand, To trample My courts?" 1.13. Bring no more vain oblations; It is an offering of abomination unto Me; New moon and sabbath, the holding of convocations— I cannot endure iniquity along with the solemn assembly." 1.14. Your new moons and your appointed seasons My soul hateth; They are a burden unto Me; I am weary to bear them." 1.15. And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide Mine eyes from you; Yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear; Your hands are full of blood." 1.16. Wash you, make you clean, Put away the evil of your doings From before Mine eyes, Cease to do evil;" 1.17. 1.1. O how has the city that was once so populous remained lonely! She has become like a widow! She that was great among the nations, a princess among the provinces, has become tributary. 1.2. She weeps, yea, she weeps in the night, and her tears are on her cheek; she has no comforter among all her lovers; all her friends have betrayed her; they have become her enemies." 1.3. Judah went into exile because of affliction and great servitude; she settled among the nations, [and] found no rest; all her pursuers overtook her between the boundaries." 1.4. The roads of Zion are mournful because no one comes to the appointed season; all her gates are desolate, her priests moan; her maidens grieve while she herself suffers bitterly." 1.5. Her adversaries have become the head, her enemies are at ease; for the Lord has afflicted her because of the multitude of her sins; her young children went into captivity before the enemy. Jerusalem recalls the days of her poverty and her miseries, [and] all her precious things that were from days of old; when her people fell into the hand of the adversary, and there was none to help her; the enemies gazed, gloating on her desolation. " 1.8. Jerusalem sinned grievously, therefore she became a wanderer; all who honored her despised her, for they have seen her shame; moreover, she herself sighed and turned away." 1.9. Her uncleanliness is in her skirts, she was not mindful of her end, and she fell astonishingly with none to comfort her. 'Behold, O Lord, my affliction, for the enemy has magnified himself.' \t" 1.10. The adversary stretched forth his hand upon all her precious things, for she saw nations enter her Sanctuary, whom You did command not to enter into Your assembly. \t" 1.11. All her people are sighing [as] they search for bread; they gave away their treasures for food to revive the soul; see, O Lord, and behold, how I have become worthless. " 1.12. All of you who pass along the road, let it not happen to you. Behold and see, if there is any pain like my pain, which has been dealt to me, [with] which the Lord saddened [me] on the day of His fierce anger. " 1.13. From above He has hurled fire into my bones, and it broke them; He has spread a net for my feet, He has turned me back, He has made me desolate [and] faint all day long. " 1.14. The yoke of my transgressions was marked in His hand, they have become interwoven; they have come upon my neck and caused my strength to fail; the Lord delivered me into the hands of those I could not withstand." 1.15. The Lord has trampled all my mighty men in my midst, He summoned an assembly against me to crush my young men; the Lord has trodden as in a wine press the virgin daughter of Judah." 1.16. For these things I weep; my eye, yea my eye, sheds tears, for the comforter to restore my soul is removed from me; my children are desolate, for the enemy has prevailed." 1.17. Zion spreads out her hands [for help], but there is none to comfort her; the Lord has commanded concerning Jacob [that] his adversaries shall be round about him; Jerusalem has become an outcast among them." 1.18. The Lord is righteous, for I have rebelled against His word; hear, I pray, all you peoples, and behold my pain; my maidens and my youths have gone into captivity." 1.21. They have heard how I sigh, [and] there is none to comfort me, all my enemies have heard of my trouble [and] are glad that You have done it; [if only] You had brought the day that You proclaimed [upon them] and let them be like me." 2.2. The Lord hath swallowed up unsparingly All the habitations of Jacob; He hath thrown down in His wrath The strongholds of the daughter of Judah; He hath brought them down to the ground; He hath profaned the kingdom and the princes thereof." 2.3. He hath cut off in fierce anger All the horn of Israel; He hath drawn back His right hand From before the enemy; And He hath burned in Jacob like a flaming fire, Which devoureth round about." 2.4. He hath bent His bow like an enemy, Standing with His right hand as an adversary, And hath slain all that were pleasant to the eye; In the tent of the daughter of Zion He hath poured out His fury like fire." 2.5. What shall I take to witness for thee? What shall I liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? What shall I equal to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion? For thy breach is great like the sea; Who can heal thee?" 2.15. All that pass by clap Their hands at thee; They hiss and wag their head At the daughter of Jerusalem: ‘Is this the city that men called The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth?’ ." 2.17. The LORD hath done that which He devised; He hath performed His word That He commanded in the days of old; He hath thrown down unsparingly; And He hath caused the enemy to rejoice over thee, He hath exalted the horn of thine adversaries." 2.18. Their heart cried unto the Lord: ‘O wall of the daughter of Zion, Let tears run down like a river Day and night; Give thyself no respite; Let not the apple of thine eye cease." 2.20. ’See, O LORD, and consider, To whom Thou hast done thus! Shall the women eat their fruit, The children that are dandled in the hands? Shall the priest and the prophet be slain In the sanctuary of the Lord?" 2.22. Thou hast called, as in the day of a solemn assembly, My terrors on every side, And there was none in the day of the LORD’S anger That escaped or remained; Those that I have dandled and brought up Hath mine enemy consumed.’" 3.1. 4.1. וַיֹּאמֶר ה' אֶל משֶׁה פְּקֹד כָּל בְּכֹר זָכָר לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וגו' (במדבר ג, מ), הֲדָא הוּא דִכְתִיב (ישעיה מג, ד): מֵאֲשֶׁר יָקַרְתָּ בְעֵינַי נִכְבַּדְתָּ וגו', אָמַר הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לְיַעֲקֹב, יַעֲקֹב הַרְבֵּה אַתְּ יָקָר בְּעֵינַי שֶׁכִּבְיָכוֹל קָבַעְתִּי אִיקוֹנִים שֶׁלְךָ בְּכִסְאִי, וּבְשִׁמְךָ הַמַּלְאָכִים מְקַלְסִין אוֹתִי וְאוֹמְרִים (תהלים מא, יד): בָּרוּךְ ה' אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל מֵהָעוֹלָם וְעַד הָעוֹלָם, הֱוֵי: מֵאֲשֶׁר יָקַרְתָּ בְעֵינַי נִכְבַּדְתָּ וגו'. דָּבָר אַחֵר, מֵאֲשֶׁר יָקַרְתָּ בְעֵינַי נִכְבַּדְתָּ, אָמַר הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לְיַעֲקֹב הַרְבֵּה יָקָר אַתְּ בְּעֵינַי, שֶׁכִּבְיָכוֹל אֲנִי וּמַלְאֲכֵי הַשָּׁרֵת שֶׁלִּי יָצְאוּ לִקְרָאתְךָ בְּצֵאתְךָ לֵילֵךְ לְפַדַּן אֲרָם וּבְבִיאָתְךָ. בְּשָׁעָה שֶׁיָּצָאתָ מַה כְּתִיב (בראשית כח, י יג): וַיֵּצֵא יַעֲקֹב וגו' וַיִּפְגַע בַּמָּקוֹם וגו' וַיַּחֲלֹם וְהִנֵּה סֻלָּם וגו' וְהִנֵּה ה' נִצָּב עָלָיו וגו'. אָמַר רַבִּי הוֹשַׁעְיָא אַשְׁרֵי יְלוּד אִשָּׁה שֶׁכָּךְ רָאָה הַמֶּלֶךְ וּפָמַלְיָא שֶׁלּוֹ נִצָּבִים עָלָיו וּמְשַׁמְּרִים אוֹתוֹ. וּמִנַּיִן בְּבִיאָתוֹ שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (בראשית לב, ב): וְיַעֲקֹב הָלַךְ לְדַרְכּוֹ וגו', הֲרֵי הַמַּלְאָכִים. הַשְּׁכִינָה מִנַּיִן, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (בראשית לה, ט): וַיֵּרָא אֱלֹהִים אֶל יַעֲקֹב עוֹד בְּבֹאוֹ וגו', הֱוֵי: מֵאֲשֶׁר יָקַרְתָּ בְעֵינַי נִכְבַּדְתָּ. דָּבָר אַחֵר, מֵאֲשֶׁר יָקַרְתָּ בְעֵינַי וגו', אָמַר הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא יָקָר אַתְּ בְּעֵינַי, שֶׁלְּכָל אֻמּוֹת הָעוֹלָם לֹא נָתַתִּי מִנְיָן וּלְךָ נָתַתִּי מִנְיָן, מָשָׁל לְמֶלֶךְ שֶׁהָיוּ לוֹ גְּרָנוֹת הַרְבֵּה וְהָיוּ כֻּלָּם טִנּוֹפוֹת וּמְלֵאוֹת זוּנִים, וְלֹא דִּקְדֵּק בְּמִנְיָנָן, וְהָיָה לוֹ גֹּרֶן אַחַת רָאָה אוֹתָהּ נָאָה, אָמַר לְבֶן בֵּיתוֹ אוֹתָן הַגְּרָנוֹת טִנּוֹפוֹת וּמְלֵאוֹת זוּנִים לְפִיכָךְ אַל תְּדַקְדֵּק בְּמִנְיָנָם, אֲבָל זֶה דַּע כַּמָּה כּוֹרִים יֵשׁ בּוֹ, כַּמָּה שַׂקִּים, כַּמָּה מוֹדִיאוֹת יֵשׁ בּוֹ. כָּךְ הַמֶּלֶךְ זֶה מֶלֶךְ מַלְכֵי הַמְּלָכִים הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא, וְהַגֹּרֶן אֵלּוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל (ישעיה כא, י): מְדֻשָׁתִי וּבֶן גָּרְנִי, וְכֵן הוּא אוֹמֵר (ירמיה ב, ג): קֹדֶשׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל לַה' רֵאשִׁית תְּבוּאָתֹה. וּבֶן בֵּיתוֹ זֶה משֶׁה, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (במדבר יב, ז): לֹא כֵן עַבְדִּי משֶׁה בְּכָל בֵּיתִי נֶאֱמָן הוּא, אָמַר הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא לְמשֶׁה, הָעוֹבְדֵי כּוֹכָבִים טִנּוֹפוֹת הֵן, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (ישעיה לג, יב): וְהָיוּ עַמִּים מִשְׂרְפוֹת שִׂיד קוֹצִים כְּסוּחִים וגו', לְפִיכָךְ אַל תְּדַקְדֵּק בְּמִנְיָנָם, אֲבָל יִשְׂרָאֵל צַדִּיקִים הֵם, כֻּלָּם חִטִּים אַגּוּדֵיהֶם, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (ישעיה ס, כא): וְעַמֵּךְ כֻּלָּם צַדִּיקִים, וְכֵן הוּא אוֹמֵר (שיר השירים ד, ז): כֻּלָּךְ יָפָה רַעְיָתִי וּמוּם אֵין בָּךְ, לְכָךְ דַּקְדֵּק בְּמִנְיָנָם שֶׁל יִשְׂרָאֵל, כָּךְ עָשָׂה משֶׁה מָנָה אוֹתָם כַּמָּה כּוֹרִין יֵשׁ בּוֹ, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר (במדבר א, ב): שְׂאוּ אֶת רֹאשׁ כָּל עֲדַת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, כַּמָּה שַׂקִּים, (שיר השירים ב, ד): וּצְבָאוֹ וּפְקוּדֵיהֶם, כַּמָּה מִדּוֹת, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: פְּקֹד כָּל זָכָר וגו'. 4.1. וְלָקַחְתָּ חֲמֵשֶׁת חֲמֵשֶׁת שְׁקָלִים וגו' (במדבר ג, מז), אָמַר הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא אַתֶּם מְכַרְתֶּם בְּכוֹרָהּ שֶׁל רָחֵל, זֶה יוֹסֵף (בראשית לז, כח). בְּעֶשְׂרִים כֶּסֶף, שֶׁהֵם חֲמִשָׁה שְׁקָלִים, לְפִיכָךְ יִהְיֶה כָּל אֶחָד וְאֶחָד מִכֶּם פּוֹדֶה בְּנוֹ הַבְּכוֹר חֲמִשָּׁה סְלָעִים בְּמָנֶה צוֹרִי. (במדבר ג, מח): וְנָתַתָּה הַכֶּסֶף לְאַהֲרֹן וּלְבָנָיו פְּדוּיֵי הָעֹדְפִים בָּהֶם, כְּשֵׁם שֶׁנִּתְּנוּ הַלְוִיִּם לְאַהֲרֹן וּלְבָנָיו, דִּכְתִיב (במדבר ג, ט): וְנָתַתָּה אֶת הַלְוִיִּם לְאַהֲרֹן וּלְבָנָיו נְתוּנִם נְתוּנִם הֵמָּה לוֹ מֵאֵת בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל, כָּךְ נִתַּן לוֹ כֶּסֶף הַפִּדְיוֹן שֶׁהָיָה בִּמְקוֹם לְוִיִּם. (במדבר ג, מט): וַיִקַּח משֶׁה אֵת כֶּסֶף הַפִּדְיוֹם וגו', כֵּיצַד עָשָׂה לָהֶם, רַבִּי יְהוּדָה וְרַבִּי נְחֶמְיָה, רַבִּי יְהוּדָה אוֹמֵר כָּךְ עָשָׂה כָּתַב עַל עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁנַיִם אֶלֶף פְּתָקִין לֵוִי לֵוִי וְנָתַן בְּקַלְפֵּי, וְעוֹד עַל מָאתַיִם וְשִׁבְעִים וּשְׁלשָׁה פְּתָקִין כָּתַב חֲמִשָּׁה סְלָעִים חֲמִשָּׁה סְלָעִים וְנָתַן בְּקַלְפֵּי וְעֵרְבָן, וְהָיָה אָבִיו שֶׁל בְּכוֹר פּוֹשֵׁט יָדוֹ בַּקַּלְפֵּי אִם עָלָה בְּיָדוֹ פֶּתֶק כְּתָב בֶּן לֵוִי, הָיָה אוֹמֵר לוֹ כְּבָר פְּדָאֲךָ בֶּן לֵוִי, וּמִי שֶׁעָלָה בְּיָדוֹ פֶּתֶק שֶׁל חֲמִשָּׁה סְלָעִים הָיָה משֶׁה אוֹמֵר לוֹ תֵּן חֲמִשָּׁה סְלָעִים שֶׁאַתָּה חַיָּב, וְכֵן עָשׂוּ כֻלָּם. וְרַבִּי נְחֶמְיָה אוֹמֵר אִם כֵּן יָכוֹל הוּא לָדוּן עִמּוֹ וְלוֹמַר לוֹ לֹא הֵימָךְ לוֹמַר לִתֵּן חֲמִשָּׁה סְלָעִים הֲרֵי נִתְמַצּוּ כָּל הַפְּתָקִין שֶׁכָּתוּב עֲלֵיהֶן לֵוִי לֵוִי, אִם אֲנִי נוֹתֵן יָדִי מָה עוֹלֶה בְּיָדִי לֹא פְּתָקִין שֶׁל חֲמִשָּׁה סְלָעִים, מִי אוֹמֵר לִי שֶׁאִם הָיָה שָׁם פֶּתֶק שֶׁל לֵוִי לֵוִי שֶׁלֹא זָכִיתִי בּוֹ, אֶלָּא כָּךְ עָשָׂה כָּתַב עַל עֶשְׂרִים וּשְׁנַיִם אֶלֶף וּמָאתַיִם וְשִׁבְעִים וּשְׁלשָׁה פְּתָקִין לֵוִי לֵוִי, וְעַל מָאתַים וְשִׁבְעִים וּשְׁלשָׁה חֲמִשָּׁה סְלָעִים, בָּאוּ וְנָתְנוּ יָדָן וּמִי שֶׁהָיָה עוֹלֶה בְּיָדוֹ חֲמִשָּׁה סְלָעִים, אִם הָיָה בָּא לוֹמַר לוֹ כְּלוּם, הָיָה מְשִׁיבוֹ משֶׁה, אִלּוּ זָכִיתָ לֹא הָיָה שָׁם פֶּתֶק לֵוִי לֵוִי, אֶלָּא שֶׁאַתְּ חַיָּב מִן הַשָּׁמַיִם, בְּאוֹתָהּ שָׁעָה הָיָה נוֹתֵן.
