Hebrew Bible, Job, 5

nanThou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue; Neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.,For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field; And the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.,Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth; Therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty.,So that He setteth up on high those that are low, And those that mourn are exalted to safety.,Call now; is there any that will answer thee? And to which of the holy ones wilt thou turn?,In famine He will redeem thee from death; And in war from the power of the sword.,At destruction and famine thou shalt laugh; Neither shalt thou be afraid of the beasts of the earth.,For He maketh sore, and bindeth up; He woundeth, and His hands make whole.,Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, And thine offspring as the grass of the earth.,Lo this, we have searched it, So it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good.,They meet with darkness in the day-time, And grope at noonday as in the night. .,But He saveth from the sword of their mouth, Even the needy from the hand of the mighty.,Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, And taketh it even out of the thorns, and the snare gapeth for their substance.,He taketh the wise in their own craftiness; And the counsel of the wily is carried headlong.,I have seen the foolish taking root; But suddenly I beheld his habitation cursed.,But man is born unto trouble, As the sparks fly upward.,But as for me, I would seek unto God, And unto God would I commit my cause;,And thou shalt know that thy tent is in peace; And thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt miss nothing.,His children are far from safety, And are crushed in the gate, with none to deliver them.,Who giveth rain upon the earth, And sendeth waters upon the fields;,For affliction cometh not forth from the dust, Neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;,He will deliver thee in six troubles; Yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.,Thou shalt come to thy grave in a ripe age, Like as a shock of corn cometh in in its season.,Who doeth great things and unsearchable, Marvellous things without number;,He frustrateth the devices of the crafty, So that their hands can perform nothing substantial.,So the poor hath hope, And iniquity stoppeth her mouth.,For anger killeth the foolish man, And envy slayeth the silly one.

And the LORD said: ‘Shall I hide from Abraham that which I am doing;" 18.18. seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him?" 18.19. For I have known him, to the end that he may command his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of the LORD, to do righteousness and justice; to the end that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which He hath spoken of him.’" 18.20. And the LORD said: ‘Verily, the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and, verily, their sin is exceeding grievous." 18.21. I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto Me; and if not, I will know.’" 18.22. And the men turned from thence, and went toward Sodom; but Abraham stood yet before the LORD." 18.23. And Abraham drew near, and said: ‘Will You indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked?" 18.24. Peradventure there are fifty righteous within the city; wilt Thou indeed sweep away and not forgive the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?" 18.25. That be far from Thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked, that so the righteous should be as the wicked; that be far from Thee; shall not the judge of all the earth do justly?’" 18.26. And the LORD said: ‘If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will forgive all the place for their sake.’" 18.27. And Abraham answered and said: ‘Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, who am but dust and ashes." 18.28. Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous; wilt Thou destroy all the city for lack of five?’ And He said: ‘I will not destroy it, if I find there forty and five.’" 18.29. And he spoke unto Him yet again, and said: ‘Peradventure there shall be forty found there.’ And He said: ‘I will not do it for the forty’s sake.’" 18.30. And he said: ‘Oh, let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Peradventure there shall thirty be found there.’ And He said: ‘I will not do it, if I find thirty there.’" 18.31. And he said: ‘Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord. Peradventure there shall be twenty found there.’ And He said: ‘I will not destroy it for the twenty’s sake.’" 18.32. And he said: ‘Oh, let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once. Peradventure ten shall be found there.’ And He said: ‘I will not destroy it for the ten’s sake.’" 18.33. And the LORD went His way, as soon as He had left off speaking to Abraham; and Abraham returned unto his place."
