Hebrew Bible, Job, 33-37

nanMy words shall utter the uprightness of my heart; And that which my lips know they shall speak sincerely.,Behold, I answer thee: In this thou art not right, That God is too great for man;,Behold, He findeth occasions against me, He counteth me for His enemy;,That men may put away their purpose, And that He may hide pride from man;,Behold now, I have opened my mouth, My tongue hath spoken in my mouth.,Then He is gracious unto him, and saith: ‘Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom.’,He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, And all his bones grow stiff;,Howbeit, Job, I pray thee, hear my speech, And hearken to all my words.,He putteth my feet in the stocks, He marketh all my paths.’ .,Why hast thou striven against Him? Seeing that He will not answer any of his words.,For God speaketh in one way, Yea in two, though man perceiveth it not.,To bring back his soul from the pit, That he may be enlightened with the light of the living.,Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid, Neither shall my pressure be heavy upon thee.,Surely thou hast spoken in my hearing, And I have heard the voice of thy words;,His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; And his bones corrode to unsightliness.,Lo, all these things doth God work, Twice, yea thrice, with a man,,If not, hearken thou unto me; Hold thy peace, and I will teach thee wisdom.,Behold, I am toward God even as thou art; I also am formed out of the clay.,’I am clean, without transgression, I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me;,Yea, his soul draweth near unto the pit, And his life to the destroyers.,Mark well, O Job, hearken unto me; Hold thy peace, and I will speak.,He prayeth unto God, and He is favourable unto him; So that he seeth His face with joy; And He restoreth unto man his righteousness.,He cometh before men, and saith: ‘I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, And it profited me not.’,That He may keep back his soul from the pit, And his life from perishing by the sword.,If there be for him an angel, An intercessor, one among a thousand, To vouch for a man’s uprightness;,If thou canst, answer thou me, Set thy words in order before me, stand forth.,Then He openeth the ears of men, And by their chastisement sealeth the decree,,His flesh is tenderer than a child’s; He returneth to the days of his youth;,So He redeemeth his soul from going into the pit, And his life beholdeth the light.,In a dream, in a vision of the night, When deep sleep falleth upon men, In slumberings upon the bed;,If thou hast any thing to say, answer me; Speak, for I desire to justify thee.,So that his life maketh him to abhor bread, And his soul dainty food.,The spirit of God hath made me, And the breath of the Almighty given me life.

nanIn a moment they die, even at midnight; The people are shaken and pass away, And the mighty are taken away without hand. .,So that they cause the cry of the poor to come unto Him, And He heareth the cry of the afflicted.,’Job speaketh without knowledge, And his words are without discernment.’,Who goeth in company with the workers of iniquity, And walketh with wicked men.,Men of understanding will say unto me, Yea, every wise man that heareth me:,Notwithstanding my right I am accounted a liar; My wound is incurable, though I am without transgression.’,Therefore hearken unto me, ye men of understanding: Far be it from God, that He should do wickedness; And from the Almighty, that He should commit iniquity.,Yea, of a surety, God will not do wickedly, Neither will the Almighty pervert justice.,Is it fit to say to a king: ‘Thou art base’? Or to nobles: ‘Ye are wicked’?—,For the ear trieth words, As the palate tasteth food.,When He giveth quietness, who then can condemn? And when He hideth His face, who then can behold Him? Whether it be done unto a nation, or unto a man, alike;,If now thou hast understanding, hear this; Hearken to the voice of my words.,Let us choose for us that which is right; Let us know among ourselves what is good.,Hear my words, ye wise men; And give ear unto me, ye that have knowledge.,That respecteth not the persons of princes, Nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? For they all are the work of His hands.,For Job hath said: ‘I am righteous, And God hath taken away my right;,Moreover Elihu answered and said:,He striketh them as wicked men In the open sight of others;,Shall His recompense be as thou wilt? For thou loathest it, So that thou must choose, and not I; Therefore speak what thou knowest.,If He set His heart upon man, If He gather unto Himself his spirit and his breath;,That the godless man reign not, That there be none to ensnare the people.,For His eyes are upon the ways of a man, And He seeth all his goings.,Would that Job were tried unto the end, Because of his answering like wicked men.,That which I see not teach Thou me; If I have done iniquity, I will do it no more’?,Shall even one that hateth right govern? And wilt thou condemn Him that is just and mighty—,For the work of a man will He requite unto him, And cause every man to find according to his ways.,For He doth not appoint a time unto any man, When he should go before God in judgment.,For he hath said: ‘It profiteth a man nothing That he should be in accord with God.’,All flesh shall perish together, And man shall return unto dust.,There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, Where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.,For hath any said unto God: ‘I have borne chastisement, though I offend not;,Therefore He taketh knowledge of their works; And He overturneth them in the night, so that they are crushed.,For he addeth rebellion unto his sin, He clappeth his hands among us, And multiplieth his words against God.,What man is like Job, Who drinketh up scorning like water?,Because they turned aside from following Him, And would not have regard to any of His ways;,Who gave Him a charge over the earth? Or who hath disposed the whole world?,He breaketh in pieces mighty men without inquisition, And setteth others in their stead.

nanThat thou inquirest: ‘What advantage will it be unto Thee?’ And: ‘What profit shall I have, more than if I had sinned?’,There they cry, but none giveth answer, Because of the pride of evil men.,I will give thee answer, And thy companions with thee.,If thou hast sinned, what doest thou against Him? And if thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto Him?,Yea, when thou sayest thou canst not see Him— The cause is before Him; therefore wait thou for Him.,But none saith: ‘Where is God my Maker, Who giveth songs in the night;,By reason of the multitude of oppressions they cry out; They cry for help by reason of the arm of the mighty.,Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, And maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?’,Thy wickedness concerneth a man as thou art; And thy righteousness a son of man.,But Job doth open his mouth in vanity; He multiplieth words without knowledge.,Surely God will not hear vanity, Neither will the Almighty regard it.,And now, is it for nought that He punished in His anger? And hath He not full knowledge of arrogance?,Moreover Elihu answered and said:,If thou be righteous, what givest thou Him? Or what receiveth He of thy hand?,Thinkest thou this to be thy right, Or sayest thou: ‘I am righteousness before God’,,Look unto the heavens, and see; And behold the skies, which are higher than thou.

nanThe noise thereof telleth concerning it, The cattle also concerning the storm that cometh up.,Remember that thou magnify His work, Whereof men have sung.,He covereth His hands with the lightning, And giveth it a charge that it strike the mark.,For He draweth away the drops of water, Which distil rain from His vapour;,Then He declareth unto them their work, And their transgressions, that they have behaved themselves proudly.,Who hath enjoined Him His way? Or who hath said: ‘Thou hast wrought unrighteousness’?,And thou art full of the judgment of the wicked; Judgment and justice take hold on them.,But if they hearken not, they shall perish by the sword, And they shall die without knowledge.,Yea, He hath allured thee out of distress Into a broad place, where there is no straitness; And that which is set on thy table is full of fatness;,He withdraweth not His eyes from the righteous; But with kings upon the throne He setteth them for ever, and they are exalted.,And if they be bound in fetters, And be holden in cords of affliction;,He preserveth not the life of the wicked; But giveth to the poor their right.,Behold, God doeth loftily in His power; Who is a teacher like Him?,For by these He judgeth the peoples; He giveth food in abundance.,Take heed, regard not iniquity; For this hast thou chosen rather than affliction.,He openeth also their ear to discipline, And commandeth that they return from iniquity.,If they hearken and serve Him, They shall spend their days in prosperity, And their years in pleasures.,He delivereth the afflicted by His affliction, And openeth their ear by tribulation.,I will fetch my knowledge from afar, And will ascribe righteousness to my Maker.,Behold, God is mighty, yet He despiseth not any; He is mighty in strength of understanding.,All men have looked thereon; Man beholdeth it afar off.,For beware of wrath, lest thou be led away by thy sufficiency; Neither let the greatness of the ransom turn thee aside.,But they that are godless in heart lay up anger; They cry not for help when He bindeth them.,Behold, He spreadeth His light upon it; And He covereth the depths of the sea.,Will thy riches avail, that are without stint, Or all the forces of thy strength?,Elihu also proceeded, and said:,Yea, can any understand the spreadings of the clouds, The crashings of His pavilion?,Their soul perisheth in youth, And their life as that of the depraved.,Which the skies pour down And drop upon the multitudes of men.,Desire not the night, When peoples are cut off in their place.,Behold, God is great, beyond our knowledge; The number of His years is unsearchable.,For truly my words are not false; One that is upright in mind is with thee.,Suffer me a little, and I will tell thee; For there are yet words on God’s behalf.

nanAt this also my heart trembleth, And is moved out of its place.,Then the beasts go into coverts, And remain in their dens.,Whether it be for correction, or for His earth, Or for mercy, that He cause it to come.,Out of the north cometh golden splendour, About God is terrible majesty.,By the breath of God ice is given, And the breadth of the waters is straitened.,Shall it be told Him that I would speak? Or should a man wish that he were swallowed up?,Out of the Chamber cometh the storm; And cold out of the north.,For He saith to the snow: ‘Fall thou on the earth’; Likewise to the shower of rain, and to the showers of His mighty rain.,Canst thou with Him spread out the sky, Which is strong as a molten mirror?,Hear attentively the noise of His voice, And the sound that goeth out of His mouth.,Men do therefore fear Him; He regardeth not any that are wise of heart.,Dost thou know the balancings of the clouds, The wondrous works of Him who is perfect in knowledge?,God thundereth marvellously with His voice; Great things doeth He, which we cannot comprehend.,He sendeth it forth under the whole heaven, And His lightning unto the ends of the earth.,After it a voice roareth; He thundereth with the voice of His majesty; And He stayeth them not when His voice is heard.,And they are turned round about by His guidance, That they may do whatsoever He commandeth them Upon the face of the habitable world:,Yea, He ladeth the thick cloud with moister, He spreadeth abroad the cloud of His lightning;,The Almighty, whom we cannot find out, is excellent in power, Yet to judgment and plenteous justice He doeth no violence.,He sealeth up the hand of every man, That all men whom He hath made may know it.,Dost thou know how God enjoineth them, And causeth the lightning of His cloud to shine?,Thou whose garments are warm, When the earth is still by reason of the south wind;,Hearken unto this, O Job; Stand still, and consider the wondrous works of God.,Teach us what we shall say unto Him; For we cannot order our speech by reason of darkness.,And now men see not the light which is bright in the skies; But the wind passeth, and cleanseth them.

7. Hebrew Bible, Ezekiel, 14.14, 14.17 (6th cent. BCE - 5th cent. BCE)

14.14. though these three men, Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, they should deliver but their own souls by their righteousness, saith the Lord GOD." 14.17. Or if I bring a sword upon that land, and say: Let the sword go through the land, so that I cut off from it man and beast;"
8. Hebrew Bible, Ecclesiastes, 4.1-4.3, 5.7 (5th cent. BCE - 2nd cent. BCE)

4.1. But I returned and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun; and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power, but they had no comforter." 4.2. Wherefore I praised the dead that are already dead more than the living that are yet alive;" 4.3. but better than they both is he that hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun." 5.7. If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and the violent perverting of justice and righteousness in the state, marvel not at the matter; for one higher than the high watcheth, and there are higher than they."
9. Septuagint, Tobit, 2.12-2.14, 3.16-3.17, 8.3, 12.12 (4th cent. BCE - 2nd cent. BCE)

2.14. And she said, "It was given to me as a gift in addition to my wages." But I did not believe her, and told her to return it to the owners; and I blushed for her. Then she replied to me, "Where are your charities and your righteous deeds? You seem to know everything! 3.16. The prayer of both was heard in the presence of the glory of the great God. 3.17. And Raphael was sent to heal the two of them: to scale away the white films of Tobits eyes; to give Sarah the daughter of Raguel in marriage to Tobias the son of Tobit, and to bind Asmodeus the evil demon, because Tobias was entitled to possess her. At that very moment Tobit returned and entered his house and Sarah the daughter of Raguel came down from her upper room. 8.3. And when the demon smelled the odor he fled to the remotest parts of Egypt, and the angel bound him. 12.12. And so, when you and your daughter-in-law Sarah prayed, I brought a reminder of your prayer before the Holy One; and when you buried the dead, I was likewise present with you.
10. Mishnah, Hagigah, 2.1 (1st cent. CE - 3rd cent. CE)

2.1. They may not expound upon the subject of forbidden relations in the presence of three. Nor the work of creation in the presence of two. Nor [the work of] the chariot in the presence of one, unless he is a sage and understands of his own knowledge. Whoever speculates upon four things, it would have been better had he not come into the world: what is above, what is beneath, what came before, and what came after. And whoever takes no thought for the honor of his creator, it would have been better had he not come into the world."
11. New Testament, James, 5.10-5.11 (1st cent. CE - 1st cent. CE)

5.10. Take, brothers, for an example of suffering and of patience, the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 5.11. Behold, we call them blessed who endured. You have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the Lord in the outcome, and how the Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
12. Tosefta, Hagigah, 2.2 (1st cent. CE - 2nd cent. CE)

2.2. Four entered the orchard: Ben Azzai, Ben Zoma, another, and Rabbi Akiva. One looked and died. One looked and was harmed. One looked and cut down the trees. And one went up in peace and went down in peace. Ben Azzai looked and died. Scripture says about him (Psalms 116, 15): \"Precious in the sight of the LORD Is the death of His saints\". Ben Zoma looked and was harmed. Scripture says about him (Proverbs 25, 16): \"Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee\" and the continuation. [Cont. of the verse: \"Lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.\" Elisha looked and cut down the trees. Scripture says about him (Ecclesiastes 5, 5): \"Suffer not thy mouth to bring thy flesh into guilt\" etc. Rabbi Akiva went up in peace and went down in peace. Scripture says about him (Song of Songs 1, 4): \"Draw me, we will run after thee\" etc. They gave a parable: What is this similar to? To the orchard of a king and there is an attic above it. It is upon [the man] to look so long as he does not move [his eyes] from it. Another parable was given. What is this similar tp? To [a street] that passes between two paths, one of fire, and one of snow. If it leans one way, it gets burned [by the fire]. If it leans the other way it gets burned by the snow. A man must walk in the middle and not lean to or fro. A story of Rabbi Yehoshua [Who was walkin in the street and Ben Zoma came opposite him] he reached him and did not greet him. He said to him [from where and to where] Ben Zoma? He said to him: I was watching the creation, and there is not between the upper waters and the lower waters even a handbreadth. As it is written (Genesis 1, 2) \"and the spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters\". And it says (Deuteronomy 32, 11): \"As a vulture that stirreth up her nest\" etc. Just as the vulture flies over the nest, touching and not touching, so too there is not even a handbreadth between the upper waters and lower waters. Rabbi Yehoshua said to his students: Ben Zoma is already outside. In a few days, Ben Zoma passed away."
13. Anon., Pistis Sophia, 3.126 (3rd cent. CE - 4th cent. CE)

14. Anon., Midrash On Song of Songs, 1.4

1.4. An additional meaning: \"See a man diligent in his work, before kings he will stand, he will not stand before mean men\", this is Rabbi Hanina. He (Rabbi Hanina) said: \"Once I saw men of the city bringing up (lit., i.e offering, sacrificing) burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. I said, \"All of them are bringing up peace-offerings to Jerusalem and I am not bringing up anything!? What will I do? Immediately I went out to the wilderness of the city, in the ruins of the city, and there I found one stone, I went out, cracked it, chiseled it, and polished it. He said, \"Behold, it is upon me to ascend to Jerusalem.\" He sought to procure workers for himself. He said to them, \"You (plural) bring up to me this stone to Jerusalem.\" He said to him, \"Give us our wages\", 100 gold pieces (\"Zahuvim\" lit., a type of gold-based currency), and we will bring your stone up to you, to Jerusalem.\" He said to them, \"And thus, from where will I have 100 gold pieces or 50 gold pieces to give to you all!?\" And he did not find for the hour, immediately they went to them. Immediately The Holy One Blessed Be He summoned to him 5 angels, with the appearance of the men (\"Sons of man\" lit.). They said to him, \"Our teacher/master, give to us 5 selas, and we will bring up your stone to Jerusalem, and only that you will give your hand with us. And he he gave his hand with them, and they were found standing in Jerusalem. He sought to give to them their wages, but he could not find them. The story came to the Chamber of Hewn Stone (the High Court). They said to him, \"Our teacher is similar to the ministering angels, they brought up your stone to Jerusalem!\" Immediately he gave to the Wise Men the wages that he was to pay with the angels."
