And Sha᾽ul sent messengers again the third time, and they prophesied also.,And an evil spirit from the Lord came upon Sha᾽ul, as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand: and David played with his hand.,And Sha᾽ul spoke to Yonatan his son, and to all his servants, that they should kill David. But Yehonatan, the son of Sha᾽ul, delighted much in David:,for he did take his life in his hand, and slew the Pelishtian, and the Lord performed a great salvation for all Yisra᾽el: thou didst see it, and didst rejoice: why then wilt thou sin against innocent blood, to slay David without cause?,And Yehonatan called David, and Yehonatan related all those things to him. And Yehonatan brought David to Sha᾽ul, and he was in his presence, as in times past.,Then he went himself to Rama, and came to the great pit that is in Sekhu: and he asked and said, Where are Shemu᾽el and David? And someone said, Behold, they are at Nayot in Rama. And he went there to Nayot in Rama:,And Yehonatan spoke good of David to Sha᾽ul his father, and said to him, Let not the king sin against his servant, against David; because he has not sinned against thee, and because his deeds have been very good towards thee:,And when the messengers were come in, behold, the terafim were in the bed, with a pillow of goats’ hair at its head.,And Sha᾽ul hearkened to the voice of Yehonatan: and Sha᾽ul swore, As the Lord lives, he shall not be slain.,and the spirit of God was upon him also, and he went on, prophesying, until he came to Nayot in Rama.,And Mikhal took the terafim, and laid them on the bed, and put the pillow of goats’ hair at its head, and covered it with a cloth.,So David fled, and escaped, and came to Shemu᾽el to Rama, and told him all that Sha᾽ul had done to him. And he and Shemu᾽el went and dwelt in Nayot.,And when Sha᾽ul sent messengers to take David, she said, He is sick.,And Sha᾽ul sent the messengers again to see David, saying, Bring him up to me in the bed, that I may slay him.,and Yehonatan told David, saying, Sha᾽ul my father seeks to kill thee: now therefore, I pray thee, take heed to thyself in the morning, and abide in a secret place, and hide thyself:,So Mikhal let David down through a window: and he went, and fled, and escaped.,And there was war again: and David went out, and fought with the Pelishtim, and slew them with a great slaughter; and they fled from him.,And Sha᾽ul said to Mikhal, Why hast thou deceived me so, and sent away my enemy, that he is escaped? And Mikhal answered Sha᾽ul, He said to me, Let me go; why should I kill thee?,and I will go out and stand beside my father in the field where thou art, and I will speak with my father about thee; and I will see what the position is, and I will tell thee.,And he even stripped off his clothes, and he himself prophesied before Shemu᾽el, and lay down naked all that day and all that night. Therefore they say, Is Sha᾽ul also one of the prophets?,And it was told Sha᾽ul, saying, Behold, David is at Nayot in Rama.,And Sha᾽ul sent messengers to take David: and when they saw the band of the prophets prophesying, and Shemu᾽el stationed over them, the spirit of God came upon the messengers of Sha᾽ul, and they also prophesied.,And Sha᾽ul sought to smite David even to the wall with the spear; but he slipped away out of Sha᾽ul’s presence, so that he smote the spear into the wall: and David fled, and escaped that night.,And Sha᾽ul sent messengers to David’s house, to watch him, and to slay him in the morning: and Mikhal David’s wife told him, saying, If thou save not thy life tonight, to morrow thou shalt be slain.

And Shemu᾽el did that which the Lord spoke, and came to Bet-leĥem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou in peace?" 16.5. And he said, In peace: I am come to sacrifice to the Lord: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Yishay and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice." 16.6. And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eli᾽av, and said, Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him." 16.7. But the Lord said to Shemu᾽el, Look not on his countece, nor on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for it is not as a man sees; for a man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart." 16.8. Then Yishay called Avinadav, and made him pass before Shemu᾽el. And he said, Neither has the Lord chosen this." 16.9. Then Yishay made Shamma pass by. And he said, Neither has the Lord chosen this." 16.10. And Yishay made seven of his sons to pass before Shemu᾽el. And Shemu᾽el said to Yishay, The Lord has not chosen these." 16.11. And Shemu᾽el said to Yishay, Are these all thy children? And he said, There remains yet the youngest, and he is tending the sheep. Then Shemu᾽el said to Yishay, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he comes here." 16.12. And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with fine eyes, and good looking. And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he." 16.13. Then Shemu᾽el took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day onwards. So Shemu᾽el rose up, and went to Rama." 16.14. But the spirit of the Lord departed from Sha᾽ul, and an evil spirit from the Lord tormented him." 16.15. And Sha᾽ul’s servants said to him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God is tormenting thee." 16.16. Let our lord now command thy servants, who are before thee, to seek out a man, who knows how to play on the lyre: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he will play with his hand, and thou shalt be well." 16.17. And Sha᾽ul said to his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me." 16.18. Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Yishay the Bet-hallaĥmite, that knows how to play, and a fine warrior, and a man of war, and prudent in speech, and a comely person, and the Lord is with him." 16.19. So Sha᾽ul sent messengers to Yishay, and said, Send me David thy son, who is with the sheep." 16.20. And Yishay took an ass laden with bread, and a bottle of wine, and a kid, and sent them by David his son to Sha᾽ul." 16.21. And David came to Sha᾽ul, and stood before him: and he loved him greatly; and he became his armourbearer." 16.22. And Sha᾽ul sent to Yishay, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he has found favour in my eyes." 16.23. And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Sha᾽ul, that David took a lyre, and played with his hand: so Sha᾽ul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him." 17.34. And David said to Sha᾽ul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:" 17.35. and I went out after it, and smote it, and delivered it out of its mouth: and when it arose against me, I caught it by its beard, and smote it, and slew it." 17.36. Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Pelishtian shall be as one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God." 17.49. And David put his hand in his bag, and took from there a stone, and slung it, and struck the Pelishtian in his forehead, that the stone buried itself in his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth." 17.50. So David prevailed over the Pelishtian with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Pelishtian, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David." 18.7. And the women answered one another as they danced, and said, Sha᾽ul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands." 19.9. And an evil spirit from the Lord came upon Sha᾽ul, as he sat in his house with his spear in his hand: and David played with his hand." 19.10.
