1. Plato, Alcibiades Ii, 148e (5th cent. BCE - 4th cent. BCE)

148e. took counsel together and decided that the best thing they could do was to send and inquire of Ammon ; and moreover, to ask also for what reason the gods granted victory to the Spartans rather than to themselves: for we —such was the message— offer up to them more and finer sacrifices than any of the Greeks, and have adorned their temples with votive emblems as no other people have done, and presented to the gods the costliest and stateliest processions year by year, and spent more money thus than
2. Thucydides, The History of The Peloponnesian War, 2.13.1, 3.68.4 (5th cent. BCE - 4th cent. BCE)

2.13.1. While the Peloponnesians were still mustering at the Isthmus, or on the march before they invaded Attica, Pericles, son of Xanthippus, one of the ten generals of the Athenians, finding that the invasion was to take place, conceived the idea that Archidamus, who happened to be his friend, might possibly pass by his estate without ravaging it. This he might do, either from a personal wish to oblige him, or acting under instructions from Lacedaemon for the purpose of creating a prejudice against him, as had been before attempted in the demand for the expulsion of the accursed family. He accordingly took the precaution of announcing to the Athenians in the assembly that, although Archidamus was his friend, yet this friendship should not extend to the detriment of the state, and that in case the enemy should make his houses and lands an exception to the rest and not pillage them, he at once gave them up to be public property, so that they should not bring him into suspicion. 3.68.4. The adverse attitude of the Lacedaemonians—in the whole Plataean affair was mainly adopted to please the Thebans, who were thought to be useful in the war at that moment raging.
3. Aristotle, Athenian Constitution, 47.4-47.5 (4th cent. BCE - 4th cent. BCE)

4. Aristotle, Politics, 1321a (4th cent. BCE - 4th cent. BCE)

5. Demosthenes, Orations, 22.13 (4th cent. BCE - 4th cent. BCE)

6. Diogenes Laertius, Lives of The Philosophers, 10.16 (3rd cent. CE - 3rd cent. CE)

10.16. and then, having bidden his friends remember his doctrines, breathed his last. Here is something of my own about him:Farewell, my friends; the truths I taught hold fast:Thus Epicurus spake, and breathed his last.He sat in a warm bath and neat wine quaff'd,And straightway found chill death in that same draught.Such was the life of the sage and such his end.His last will was as follows: On this wise I give and bequeath all my property to Amynomachus, son of Philocrates of Bate and Timocrates, son of Demetrius of Potamus, to each severally according to the items of the deed of gift laid up in the Metroon
